Anybody got any strong feelings about these Squatter's Rights possibly being kicked into touch ?. Personally I'm in two minds, why the Hell shouldn't an unoccupied be used by those without shelter on the other hand why should someone else's property be up for grabs just because no-one's living there at the time ?. Taking these 'Rights' further, if your out on the bike and your not using your car (if you've got one) could some r'sole just take it for his or her own use just because you're not using it at the time and have the protection (?) of the Law. Question

My nextdoor neighbours at uni last year had squatters.

Turned out there was an old lady living there. Or, more accurately, had lived there...she was the homeowner and her son, who I spoke to later (a middle class guy with a family) inherited the house in the will.

Anyway, for about two weeks we kept hearing loud foreign music. One day the police came round and told us they thought there were squatters next door and if we knew anything, and we told them about the music.

Two days later and a car is parked outside our drive blocking it. I go up to speak to the driver and find out he is the old lady's son. We meet and greet as neighbours and he tells me he is staking out the house waiting for the squatters to come out. I wish him luck and go to my lecture.

When I came back there was a police car there and two police men were apprehending this tiny asian lady coming out of the house. The guy took the keys off her and went in. Two minutes later he came out crying. We later found out the body of his dead mother had been on the sofa in the living room the whole time, and a whole family of koreans had been living there.

Pretty disgusting if you ask me. They moved in literally the day after she died. None of them spoke any English. Seemed pretty dodgy to me and vindicated my stance against squatters "rights".

You do know that most squatters are bored middle class idiots going through the "let's pretend we are ordinary oiks" don't you? That's why most of the properties they destroy are large posh empty ones. On the other side of the coin, there is a disturbing trend for foreigners breaking into the furnished homes of people who are at work and a system that won't back the home owners. Bring on jail sentences for these arseholes.

And there's the problem with laws which are designed for those who have an ounce of common decency, they're exploitable, which leads to the problems you're mentioning.

With that said, I think squatter's rights is essentially just a great cover up for the inefficiency of the housing system.

They should be evicted and prosecuted for burglary and theft to the value of the house and contents.

My sister was one of the middle class idiots.

She lived in a squatt in barcelona, with other like minded individuals. She would tell us that the owner wasnt using the big posh house, that it should be used and that they didnt damage it. However, from other things she said, if they were tenants they wouldnt have been getting their deposit back. Fitting a trapeze in the oversize living room may be great fun, but it's hardly leaving only footprints taking only photographs.

This is the kind of girl who would lecture you on global warming if you have a car with an oversize engine, but likes 'travelling' (extended holidays) involving lots of plane flights that leave lots of nasties in the upper atmosphere.

Basically someone with a fast car will justify speeding, a burglar will justify stealing.

I know that generally the rules of society are more diligently enforced in favour of the rich, and squatting was the exception, but it's still a selfish inconsiderate use of someone else's stuff.

As for the guy who found his mum on the sofa, I'd be more than crying and would be suspecting foul play. However I'm not sure the story sounds plausible, as I dont think he could have inherited without someone removing the body. How would anyone have known the old lady was dead if no one knew the body was there ? If someone knew the body was there, would they have really left it there and not told him ? Obviously the squatters wouldn't have told him.

Well the house looked pretty run down so maybe the wee three koreans thought it was empty - and in a way they were right, because the only other inhabitant was a recently deceased corpse. The son of this woman only found out she was dead when it was reported that there were squatters living there. At least I think that's what happened, it's what he told us... Confused

Did they ever discuss personal hygiene? Place must have stunk like a fat rendering plant flanked by a sewage works and a glue factory.

Accept that not all home-owners purchase their property with the intention of using it as currency, or even care about its residual value. I didn't buy my house to make money on it, nor was it an investment purchase. I bought it because I wanted something I could make my own and cannot be removed from unless I screw up my own finances. I don't get that surety with renting. I own my home with the intention to live in it, long term, and therefore the only currency that interests me is that of time spent in it.

Empty council houses..... Fair game if you ask me.

The homeless people are solving a problem quicker than the "powers that be".
They obviously need help from the government/benefits agency etc and they're not getting it so what choice do they have but to help themselves

I dont know how many homeless people there are or how many empty council houses there are but i would hazard a guess that there would be enough room for everyone.

Empty privately owned houses..... Bang out of order.
I'm not into spending hard earned cash on something only for someone to take it away from me.

Ironically it's the rules / regs around fit and proper housing which lead to the greatest down time in social housing. A lot of the properties sitting empty are void for a reason - according to regs they're not fit for habitation - so when a squatter moves in and makes use of it, it just pushes back the timescales of getting the work done to push the house back into full time use.

Huge, absolutely monster, inefficiencies in council housing - some housing associations are much better run, and then some are totally dire.

I completely see your POV dude.

But lets not forget that councils use that as an excuse for preventing them carrying on with the work.

"We cannot continue with this project until #23 is empty. We must wait. We will not start work on #24. What is multi tasking?"

Catch my drift?

It's a good and a bad thing really. Bad for the genuine squatters who have no option but to sleep rough and the idea of squatting is like a mini holiday.

Good for the dickhead squatters, the type of squatters who do it because the £10000 a month daddy gives them would make life too easy, however would they be able to write "poetry" if their life was easy.

The way to make your socialist Utopia happen is for all of them to zip it and do or make something, contribute rather than comment, if you will. We have developed a way of valuing said contributions, and the crib notes are that if nobody is paying you for the noises that come out of your bong-hole, then you're not doing anything worthwhile.

Workhouses got a bad name, but they ensured that indolence was rarely a lifestyle choice.

As with all bells and whistles heralded changes of the law, the proof of the pudding is often in the eating. The law might be dressed up as something the vast majority of 'voters' find themselves agreeing with, such as the notion that private property should be respected and not damaged. But then to what other ends could such a law be twisted and interpreted to fit?

Landlord not upholding his obligations to tenants, bit of a dispute over something that is broken or faulty? Could the new law be used to 'evict' tennants as 'squatters' should the landlord wish to play dirty and circumvent the current process of serving notice to quit? Fall upon hard times and get behind with the mortgage, can the mortgagee use the new law to circumvent the current reposession process and evict the person renting the property from the bank much faster?

After all when Tony Blair Sick stood up and told the nation it needed some overbearing anti terrorism laws for our own good. Who would have thought those same powers would now be used against people taking photographs in public places and people demonstrating peacefully and lawfully against arms firms?
