The CBR400 and the NC30 are 2 different bikes mate. The NC is a VFR400.
All good for 400's though.

NC30 = VFR400 V4 400 4 stroke
NC29= CBR400 in-line 4 400 4 stroke

Both are however equally reliable with similar performance.

Be warned however out of all the bikes people want after passing their A2 the CBR400 is high, if not top of the shopping list. Expect to pay close to £3k for a mint one and £2k for a good condition on. Very expensive for a 15 year old bike imo, but the choice is yours.

Ebay is good if you are lookign to get a bargin one or a fixer upper. bikemart or adtrader are best for getting a well looked after good condition one

NC23 = CBR400.

That bike is a CBR400 Tri Arm, and quite old.

The respray looks good sure, but it might be a dog underneath.

Look for a CBR400 Gull Arm. Thumbs Up Smile

Right.

The bike in the picture is an NC23, a CBR400 Triarm.

A beautiful bike by all accounts, and in a way actually nicer to ride than the NC29 Gullarm. I used to own a tri and upgraded to a gull after my baby got stolen

See www.bikepics.com/members/bella

Both bikes are beautiful, fun to ride and fairly easy to get parts for. Thumbs Up

CBR400 gullarm I have. Handles ace. More than enough power for you just after passing your test. Can’t fault it, except price. They are bloody expensive. Didn’t really affect me though as I got my 92 for 1300, and it runs all fine.

After the abuse I give it (now that im over the "oooo look at my nice looking bike" stage, Wink) , and the ammount of times it’s been on its side, like the time I tried riding the bike with a disc lock on Shocked , I wouldn’t recommend buying something mint and really expensive.

Try and get a cheap one in the winter time, when they will be at their cheapest. Check it out properly as wave 2k says, please. Any probs, haggle if you can sort them. Any major/costly ones, walk away. Simple as that. There are enough around.

Cbr400/vfr400 both similar performance and handling: you will not be able to tell the difference. Cbr easier to work on due to inline 4 engine config. as opposed to v4, which is a plus point that appeals to me. Both are great.

Get either (vfr or cbr) in good nick and you won’t be disappointed. Just don’t go spending loads because you will drop it. Trust me... Smile

ZXRs tend to be more expensive than CBRs.

The main difference between the CBR and most other sports 400s is the power delivery. The CBR is must more powerful in low end revs making it faster pulling away and accelerating. VFS and ZXRs tend to have a higher top end speed which, basically, you'll never need! Top end on the CBRs is pushing 140 depending on age/condition etc. You get a few more mph on the other 400s. Personally, I would say the low end power is much more useful Thumbs Up

The CBR400 is the CBR Aero. Its looks like the "jellymould" CBR600. It's frame number is NC23.

The bike above is a CBR400RR Tri-Arm. It's frame number is also NC23, but people almost never use the term NC23 to refer to the Aero. The engine is a development of the Aero engine, but with gear-driven cams.

The NC29 is a later CBR400RR, with a few changes. They cost more than the earlier ones, but aren't any better in the real world.

You can pick up NC23s (CBR400RRs) for not a lot, get a race system and sort the suspension for not a lot, and have a wicked bike for the twisties Thumbs Up

Far more info on https://www.400greybike.co.uk/ , or email me.

Get a 600 mate. Much better pricing on bikes and bits. You'll only get bored with the 400. Very Happy

I hate to say it, he's right. I'm not bored of my bike, I love it. Very Happy
But IMO I would go for a bigger bike. I'm already after a new bike and I have had mine 2 months. Shocked Always want more.

I've heard about engine swaps before, so that's probably what's happened with your mate's bike. Cosmetically though the Tri-arm and the Aero are very different, and given how cheaply you can pick up a tri-arm, there's little point. You can get a belter of a tri-arm for (very roughly) a grand, far far cheaper than the gull arm. You can potentially spend silly money on 400, so they get slagged for being too expensive, when in reality you just need to find the correct bike.

If you want manic acceleration and speed, get a 600. If you want to thrash your bike and learn how to keep your speed up through the corners, and keep your licence more intact, get a cheap 400 like a CBR. You'll be able to do more work on it yourself, if you feel so enclined, and I've never had a problem getting parts for mine.

From quick basic online quotes (and phoning round for a 400) insurance works out at about half the price (in my case at least). So although a 600 sounds like a good idea costs may not allow one.

If your going to get a CBR 400 apparently the Tri-arm is better than the gull-arm (probably no difference to most people) but its a lot cheaper as they dont have the looks, but they are also older so more wear and tear.

Hi

I thought the CBR400 Aero had gear driven cams as well. It comes from the time when Honda couldn't design a cam chain tensioner to save their lives so gave up on several bikes and fitted gear driven cams.

All the best

Quoth the Haynes manual (reproduced without permission, typed from my very own paid-for manual);

Quote:
Although the motor was a development of the earlier CBR400 Aero that looked just like an early 'jellymould' CBR, the double-R had gear-driven cams and an aluminium frame as well as a 17-inch front wheel and a mouth-watering styling complete with twin-headlamp fairing. Bear in mind that that the FireBlade was four years away and the 600 cc CBR had camshafts driven by chains and a tubular steel chassis and you can see why the double-R was such a success. In fact in terms of the technology, it was nearer to the RC30 that was launched for 1988 and its 400 cc sibling the NC30, or VFR400R, as shown by the fact that the 400 cc in-line four also had a factory code: NC23. In fact it was better known as the Tri-Arm, a reference to the sticker on the side of the fairing meant to draw attention to the heavily triangulated swinging arm that looked like it had just been unbolted from a factory racer.

long time baby CBR owner myself, mine was bought for 1650, overlooked how bad it was, cos it was shiny, and its approaching 3 grand paid on top of that to fix it up, so watch yourself, and take someone with you who knows

i have an NC29 cos i like the looks, ive heard from lots of people that the NC23 is actually the better bike on the inside (more used parts availibility also), but no one can deny the datedness of the look

NC23's that much cheaper as mentioned, NC29 that much more, if you are attracted to the tartyness of the latter, go for standard paintschemes only, otherwise (like myself) you could be digging a money pit

engines are generally sound, but lots of other stuff can be shot

so basically good bikes, but dont get a nackered one
