ARGH! This damn bike! Every time I get one problem sorted, something else seems to go wrong the next day! No sooner do I replace the chain and sprockets that it fuel starts leaking out the bottom of the bike whenever the fuel-line is turned on.
Someone once told me trick to try to sort this out -- something about unblocking some dirt which is clogging a fuel regulation needle (??) -- but I can't quite remember it! Something like turning the fuel off and holding the throttle fuel on whilst hitting the starter...?? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or if it's complete bollocks, can you suggest something I should try before I have to spend yet more money at a garage! (I'm broke!)
It's been raining a lot recently, and sometimes I have to leave my bike uncovered outside, could this have anything to do with it? Also, since I noticed it leaking fuel earlier today it's been running pretty poorly, as in it cuts out almost as soon as you stop revving it.
Would much appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions! Just want my bike to be in a reliably working state for practically the first time since I've had it!
Thanks,
tom. |

If it is coming out of a hole in the bottom of the carb. You have either a sticking float or a piece of muck in the needle valve. Try gently tapping the side of the carb with piece of wood, if the floats are sticking, this can free them off. You can tell if it has worked by the way the fuel stops pissing out. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Yes, that part is the needle valve, it is possible that there is a piece of muck in it. I wouldn't go playing with the float heights if I were you, in my experience, they never spontaneously change themselves. It is always a result of someone fiddling with them, if you haven't already, don't do it now until you are certain that is the problem.
If you take it apart, make sure the floats (part 38) aren't punctured by pulling out the pin (39) and gently lifting them out, see if they float evenly in a bowl of water and make sure there is no fluid inside them. Doing this also removes the needle valve (the bottom bit of part 2), which sits loosley in the float assembly. Check the needle valve and its seat for any defects or small bits of grit/muck etc., use a magnifying glass.
It also looks from that picture like your needle valve is the type that has a small sprung pin sticking out of the flat end of it. These can sometimes stick in which would cause the exact fault you describe. Free it off by spraying with WD40 and working it up and down 'till it moves freely.
Reassembly is the reverse of the above...pretty much.
If the bike has sat for a while, you might find the inside of the carb is covered in a brown 'varnish' like deposit from evaporation of the old fuel. Acetone (nail varnish remover) will shift it but you mustn't get any on rubber componants or gaskets as they will dissolve. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
