My Dad had an itch for something huge, 1960s and drop top, so he scratched it. He is a big Buick fan so it had to be an Electra 225. He imported it himself after buying it on E-bay, third time he has done this Laughing It arrived on the RO-RO ferry from the US in early August, and has been waiting for the DVLA to get their arses in gear and register it, will be officially on the road on Monday!

Vital statistics are as follows:
20ft overall length,
127" wheelbase,
Just under 7ft wide,
430Ci (7.1 litre) hi-po V8,
360hp, 500lb/ft,
2.3+ tons of American pig iron,
Limited slip diff,
Wierd burnished brown paint, about 4 different colours depending on lighting,
excellent condition for 43 years old!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-64PyRfjVg
^^ little vid of hood operation and under bonnet.

Bearing in mind this is 1969, the car has electric hood, all windows are electric, electric antenna, electric mirrors, 6 way electric bench seat, Air con, variable rate power steering etc. performance is pretty damn good, Road and Track tested it back in 1969 and got a 15.5 second quarter mile with a 2.73 gear ratio, cross plies and the motherfucking top down. Equating to a 7.2 second 0-60 run with cruiser gearing. This car has 3:32:1 gearing, radials and the limited slip diff option, so is likely low 6 seconds to 60 car, pretty ballistic.

Hideously ugly IMHO. Never been a fan of big American cars like that.
Hope your old man is happy with it.

Thumbs Up

No doubt, it's from the ugly ages of full size American cars. When you start approaching the late 60's, the big full sizers get hideous. However if you want to own one they are the last realistically priced cars. A '59 or mid sixties Electra in condition like this will set you back anywhere from $40,000-$100,000+

Only made 8,000 of these so you are unlikely to run into another one 40 years later. Laughing

We live on the Isle of Wight, oddly enough the incredible suspension on these large cars makes them particularly suited down here, the roads are truely terrible. This just floats over it all. But no, enclosed spaces would not be your friend.

How come a car of such ginormous proportions has the worlds skinniest steering wheel?
Looks weird and just wrong!

I think you'll find land yacht is the traditional term for a large convertible. Barge is hard top, usually 4 door. Terms reflect size and useage, land yacht a luxury thing for swanning about in with the top down, barge for carrying stuff like people and coal. Wink

Most cars from this age have thin steering wheels, regardless of size or origin, was the style at the time.

Can't say I like most American cars from the mid-50s onwards. 40s and early-50s ones are good though, before they started getting really silly.

At least on British cars of the era, the wheel actually serves a useful function Wink

After reading the thread on here somewhere where someone got a sports bike in a Clio/some other small car, I reckon you could get the small car in the back of that thing, so a sports bike in a car in a car, do it! Laughing

Dare I ask what the fuel consumption is like on these things ?

I dont think it is in miles per gallon, but in gallons per nautical mile.

Once you weigh anchor and start the engines, a few gallons are already gone. Then you must plan a route that passes by several fleet tankers, unless you are counting on laying sail to finish your journey.

Do not like the car. Then it's personal choice. Hope you/dad enjoy.

I would however like to know where you can get the tent garages.

Such as to hang on to when it's caught fire again, or one of the wheels has fallen off and you've got to jump on the brakes to GTFO asap. Actually, I own a 1970 Vauxhall Viva, and to be frank the steering is just as wank on that as it is on anything American from that era. The American stuff is just a lot faster. Laughing

Quote:

8-10mpg around town, about 18mpg when cruising. Fairly irrelevent though, this'll do about 1,200 miles going to shows and on brief jaunts in a year. Few enough miles to allow the free tax to offset a lot of the fuel cost.

Kradmelder, you fucking crack me up. Laughing

My Dad also has 1969 Riviera. It is downright beautiful and has just had a photoshoot to appear in Classic American. Thumbs Up The boat tail is utterly, utterly hideous. Back is great but the front and the bodyline down the side is just ghastly.

Fair enough, each to his own! It's pretty hard to dislike in the flesh though. Smile To be honest it's my least favourite car of his to look at, but the nicest to be in!

Ah, https://www.protech-shelters.co.uk/ is what you want. Metal framed, heavy duty covering, years of guarantee and no required planning permission as counts as a temporary shelter. Run some electric in there with a bit of strip lighting and a proper floor and you have a massive garage for about £600. The Electra shelter is 22ft x 10ft and the Riviera shelter is 18ft x 9ft. The Electra shelter is new but the other has been erected for over 11 years now and still looks new.

Probably best to avoid the £150 ones in the link above. Naturally, you get what you pay for.

Hehe, JFKs was a Lincoln. '66 Continental I believe. Awesome car to get splattered in.
