How hard would it be to fit a centre stand to a bike that never had one fitted as standard?

I park my bike on the road (Honda VRX400) and it's not the steadiest on its side stand... it wouldn't take much of a push to push it over. That means a shove from a car or a drunken chav on a Friday night could cost me at any time.

I'm thinking a centre stand would help, but have no idea how I'd fit one... are there generic centre stands that are designed to fit any bike...?

FWIW i had a ZRX11 and that had no centre stand. The side stand was also to long making the bike unstable in wind. You could look into a shorter stand to give the bike more lean. Dont go to short though.

I know SW Motech make a centre stand for the XT600E and plenty of other bikes - I know this is no good for your bike (I can't see one for your bike on their site) but it means there are companies out there making stands.

If the sidestand is causing the bike to stand up too straight, grind down the stop so that it swings forward more when down. This allows the bike to settle at more of an angle from upright and makes it a lot sturdier on the stand and less likely to roll off it.
Take care - a little bit of grinding makes a lot of difference to the angle, so grind and test 1mm at a time.

A major pain the arse for what you'd get at the end of it, i would have thought, unless someone is already making centrestands for them. I think the centrestand on the VFR is actually less stable than the sidestand, as its much more susceptible to side-to-side forces.

If you're designing your own centrestand, and getting someone to make it, you're either going to need room for clamps, or get mounts welded on to the frame, and you need to get the length and balance point right for it to be stable on the stand, and make it possible to actually get on to it. Might be a bit trial and error.

I'd try to make your sidestand better.

That is the problem as said above that needs to be sorted.
With three points of contact in a triangle it is normally a very secure base.

Sort side stand or take to a main dealer for advice and if possible compare with another VRX.

Thumbs Up

Thanks all, sounds like a centre stand would be a fair bit of work/cost.

Think I'll give filing the side stand a go; just another couple of degrees would make me happier... it currently makes the bike sit pretty much upright with just enough lean to shift the weight onto the stand.
