so my mate/neihbour who is buying my bike brought his boss' laptop (well, netbook) round for me to delete virus's off it because he's useless and cant do anything with computers apparently.

anyway, booted it up in safe mode and running eset online scanner.

the laptop got that police childporn virus. which is why it needed scanning.

now i didnt expect this

31% into the scan.

how the hell does someone run a computer with 64 virus and NOT notice?!

i've been watching it and theres at least 15 or more different ones.

granted theres some appearing multiple times but still, its a large number not to have noticed any impact.

A lot of viruses purpose is to not be detected in normal use as well. Spyware.

You probably wont notice most virus'. Most wont want you to know that they exist, so they wont show obvious signs.

A lot are false alarms, or things that aren't really issues like "Sky cookie detected!" OMFG NO! NOT A COOKIE!!111ONE

Provided it's not key logging / giving remote access / sending emails / using bandwidth / popping shit up all the while it's not much of an issue and most people will only notice once it starts doing the latter.

Not easier just to re-install windows? I imagine that there is probs a recovery partition on the netbook. Failing that a good precracked windows 7 image isn't exactly hard to find online.

well it ended with 71 threats and 71 removed.

the most noticable was the increased speed and of course that police crap not showing up anymore.

reinstall wasnt an option as it was a "work netbook". he's a builder or contractor. runs the business as best i can tell.

either way, easy £10. eset online scanner is a awesome removal tool at end of the day.

This was on a laptop i sorted out a couple of weeks ago.

2 days later i had another laptop to clean up, had in excess of 3500 issues.

Not cookies either, i remove those and other temp files before scanning.

A friend of mine bought a laptop from a car boot sale, guy was selling it because it was too slow to use anymore, I cleared it up for him and as it turns out the guy was just using it as his porn machine, surfing every site know to man without any for of virus protection, had about 1100 virus' picked up. Ran like a new machine once it had been cleared of all the shite!
