So i ditched the hard leather bags as advised, instead i have soft leather barrel bags. All set to go camping today (Will be in Buxton if anyone wants to join) and just making sure its safe to go.
Is it expected for luggage to move side to side abit, like 3 inches?

barrel bag on pillion seat attached using its own velcro straps and one bungee cord routed around the luggage rack, containing sleeping bag and a couple of other bits.
Leather holdall held on with 2 seatbelt straps in a criss cross way, this bag moves slightly but is it anything to worry about? Contains complete tent and pegs, some other stuff

For everything else i got a cheap tank bag off ebay.

In the 2nd pic, whats stopping that bungy from slipping forward & down? might be safer with a cargo net over the whole thing.

Clipping onto the D-ring thing probably not wise as it could pull out after a lot of miles and bumps.
You want everything held twice ideally so if something gives way it maybe moves a bit but doesn't just drop off as the secondary bungee/strap holds it.

Have you got something to put under your side stand on the grass?

A flattened beer can will do, but if none are lying about you have to drink one very quickly.

I'd wind a very long bungee around everything and cover with a cargo net as a backup.

How can one man fail so hard at such a simple task?

Cargo.
Nets.
For.
The.
Win.

Forget all this leather nonsense, you're not impressing anyone. Just get some functional, fuck ugly luggage, and deal with it.

The BBQ is only a weekend, isn't it? You seem to have enough luggage for several weeks.

As others have said, cargo nets + bungees for the win.

Those bags may leak a tad because it will rain (north of Watford Gap and all that...). If you still have time before you go, may I suggest a Jack Wolfskin pothole/canoe bag - totally waterproof and best secured with bungees and a cargo-net.
