... and ladies too.

Is it just me being a miserable bastard or does anybody else think they're a massive waste of money?

For the last few years my mates have been badgering me to go away with them to Ibiza, Faliraki and Butlins etc.

However, to me it just seems like a huge waste of money that I could spend on my bike, car and doing things with the missus or spending it on something that's going to last longer than a week.

As far as I'm concerned, if I want to get bollocksed I can do that down the pub or in the comfort of my own home.

I realise that the 'holidays' would create memories for a life time but I just can't justify wasting that sort of money.

Anybody else feel the same way?

No. On a related note, it might be linked to the fact you can do these things at home. So it doesn't feel that special.

Valid point. I'm trying to save for a mortgage at the moment so if I buy within the next year or two money is going to be really tight. My other half keeps saying I should go as before long I won't have a choice due to bigger financial ties. She's probably right but I'm not convinced lol.

No other reason than I feel it's money that could be better spent.

You could say that about most things that aren't food, travel to work and rent. I mean, why buy a TV, you could get a wind up radio and a years supply of second hand books for £20.

A damn good piss up with a few of the lads every couple of years is a great way to let the hair down. That said, if you don't fancy it, then don't go on one.

Each to their own mate, life is too short. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

This. After wasting lots of money on certain parts of my gap year (spent so much on a few nights out in Brisbane after working on a cattle farm that I realised I couldn't go to Bali with the wages as I'd planned) I realised that boozing is the same wherever you do it (unless you do something that is actually really different - like, off the top of my head, booze it up with some mates while riding camels in the middle of the desert, I dunno - you will always end up in strobe-lit, noisy, sweaty, overcrowded nightclubs or nightclub type places)

What could be more fun than clay pigeon shooting/ quad biking at £60 an hour with a hangover?

I have the same feeling about 'going out' in general.

About the only reason I do it is because it's difficult to convince others that actually, a night in at someone's house is much cheaper and much more fun as you can actually speak.

Socializing, to some extent, is more important to me than saving a bit of money. Though I'd rather go on holiday by myself or with the girlfriend. I enjoy solitude.

Meaningless comment.
You do some things in exchange for other things.

I hardly ever eat out. Therefore, I can have a bike without raiding my savings.

I trade 1 week in some country miles away, for potentially months camping around the UK. Actually, I just do 3 or 4 weeks and pocket the difference.

But then, I don't have kids to 'get away from'. I doubt I ever will.

Often it's not money that is the issue, but time.

Of course, everyone has preferences. My girlfriend would rather eat out than have a bike. Nothing wrong with that.

Exactly right. I go on nights out with my friends and don't drink/volunteer to drive quite often purely because I can't be arsed to waste the money on a night I won't particularly enjoy whether drunk or sober.. I only actually go to make an effort to be social (and also cause my mates occasionally pay me for driving them in Wink)

I've been to Newquay but never to any of these "lads" holiday destinations like Ibiza, Maga etc, as much as my friends have pestered me to.. And I agree with you OP, it aint worth it. At all.

My girlfriend loves clubbing and can't get enough of it but I think it's a waste of time, it's not social if you can't hear when you leave.

The only time I've been on a "lads' holiday" has been when I've gone up to Edinburgh for the festival - the atmosphere, the shows, the general feel of the place is something I can't get at home, and Edinburgh is a beautiful city too.

But I can't think of anything worse than a lads' trip to Ibiza or something; Inbetweeners style. That'd be pure agony from the word go.

On the other hand, when it's just the two of us, me and the missus have had some awesome holidays - wreck diving in Malta, flying over Hawaiian volcanoes in a helicopter, wining and dining in NYC or just chilling in a hotel/castle/stately house in Blighty somewhere.

When you're on holiday with someone you can't really get away from them. So if you're with someone you love you have a great time but if you're with someone who irritates you in any way you'll just dwell on it and end up fighting and bickering. Not my cup of tea.

I went on a lads holiday to Ayia Napa last year and I will never go on one, ever, again.

The last 'lads holiday' I had was a few years ago - 4 of us went up to the Lake District, we spent the days walking, and the nights feasting and boozing.

Probably not your typical 'lad holiday', but we had a top time.

Completely different.. I think I'd really enjoy that too! The "typical lads holiday" is a lot of lad's worst nightmares nowadays...

Something like that appeals to me, getting arse faced for the sake of it doesn't. Myself and a friend have been talking about talking our mountain bikes to the lake district or similar but it hasn't materialised as he's always skint (still in Uni).

I don't like the idea of a 'lads', or more aptly for me 'girls' holiday, not because of the money-could-be-better-spent issue, but because I can't think of anything worse than having to spend an entire week with solely girls. I much prefer my environment to have a decent mix of both testosterone and oestrogen!

Also not into the getting pissed and not doing much else, I like to use my time to 'do' and 'achieve' things, and not in a 'i drank 8 pints last night and got blotto' kinda way. Been there, done that, find fun in loads of other things now, which alcohol would only destroy the chances of doing (and remembering!)

I've never met someone who hasn't had the urge to go on holiday so I've never really thought about people who perhaps don't. Nowt wrong with being happy where you are if you ask me, but there are certainly some beautiful places in the world to go and explore and I for one wouldn't like to miss out on the opportunity to go see em, so any spare cash I do have tends to go in savings for a nice holiday.
