Quicky

Im mid way through restrictive license (mod 2 to go) which means i can ride up to a 33 bhp machine for 2 years..

Reading with the new laws in Jan the restrictive license grants 47 bhp..

Now will i be able to ride a 47 bhp machine when the new law comes in or will i be restricted to 33 bhp ??

cheers

You'll be restricted to 33bhp until the 2 years are up from passing the test. The new changes only come into effect for those taking their test after the deadline. You could pass your test the day before they bring in the new system and still be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years and then able to ride anything.

Thumbs Up

AS Pinky says, you'll be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. After that, ride anything you want as the restriction is up. Not bad for doing the test on your own 125.

Those taking the test after January are restricted to 47hp FOREVER. That is unless they do another test on a bigger bike that grants them a Full A licence.

Yup, you'll have an "A<=25kW" license, it'll upgrade after 2 years and won't be effected by the license changes. It's a different category from the new 35kW A2 license that's coming next year.

It's confusing, I know, since you'll sit a "standard" test on an "A2" motorcycle and get an "A<=25kW" license. It doesn't help that the DVLA mongtards actually list A<=25kW as "A2" in 'previous entitlement' on counterparts. Doh!

But, never mind all that bollocks, you'll be on 25kW for 2 years, is all you need to know.

Agree with the above. You will be restricted for the 2 years to 33bhp.

The licence code for what you are entitled to ride will appear on your licence.
New codes are being used for the new regulations from Jan 2013.
These codes indicate what you can ride.

You must ride in accordance with your licence.

However, worth noting from this firm of solicitors it does not necessarily invalidate your insurance as perhaps the police would make you believe.

I'd just get on and pass the mod 2 and enjoy riding without L plates and upgrade the bike after 2 years.

Best of luck with the test Thumbs Up

We don't know yet how the DVLA intend to balls this one up, but A1 and A (or we might call it A3 although that's not in the 3DLD) are the same as the current categories, so I can't see them dicking around with those.

It's only A2 that defines a new category, and since they've never used that on photocards (although they do erroneously use it on counterparts) they can just add that from next year.

Oh, here's a laugh, if you pass A1 at 17 (I doubt anyone will, but bear with me), build up 2 years of experience for insurance purposes, then pass A2 at 19 and then A/A3 at 21, want to bet that insurers will knock you back to 0 years again each time and treat you the same as someone who's just jumped on a bike? Anyone want to take that bet? Aaaaanyone at all?

i have a question too

say i pass this year, i get my restricted license, which as far as all the licensing people are concerned is classed as a2 on the license? so what happens when my restriction ends, do i send the license in, they give me one with A on it, or does it just disappear OR am i thinking this wrong, and the way it actually will show your entitlement will be A- with a restriction of 33bhp from xxdate to xxdate?

Mr. Green

You don't HAVE to get it removed from your license, it doesn't change the date it expires. But you can send it off to the DVLA to have it removed (May be a fee involved)

Nope. It's "A <= 25kW". It's confusing as hell, because "A2" is a current DSA classification for the bike that you'll sit it on (121-125cc, <=11kW, 100kph+), so people have been calling the license class that for years, including insurers and even the DVLA (on the 'previous entitlement' on the counterpart), but there is currently no such license category, and the DVLA will confirm this if pressed.

You don't have to do anything, although the "To" date on that line of your license shows when it expires (your 70th birthday) not when it upgrades. Coppers aren't particularly well trained though, and it might be an issue (on the spot) if you show a license still saying "<=25kW".

So you can get it updated to show A. DO NOT SEND IT BACK, just tick the "lost" box (so you can "find" it again), and buy a replacement (£20) or do a change of address (£0).

Congratulations, you'll (probably) get back a license that shows you've got A entitlement from the date that it upgraded, i.e. 2 years after you passed your test.

You'll now have to be very careful when getting insurance. Read the question you're being asked very carefully. "When did you pass your test" is not the same as "How long have you had that license category" (as eBike ask). If they ask "How long have you had your license" then the interpretation is anyone's guess; the chances of you finding someone who can even understand the question let alone give you a definitive answer aren't great.

Fun, eh? Wink

when i passed my car test and went with aviva, they took the date i got my provisional license as how long i had held a licnese...

every other insurer takes the date i passed my test...

(oddly, Aviva are still the more expensive option - and even tried to chase me down for the cost of a courtesy car when an uninsured driver smacked into the back of me... despite me having cover for courtesy car lol.)

insurance companies are a rip off... note how a non-fault claim will increase your premium... (why? - its not your fault if somebody else cant drive?)

sadly, since insurance is a legal requirement, they do what they want... Razz

---

also, can you take your NCB from learner 125 onto a bike after passing your test?

Razz

You can't have your ncb taken away from you unless you've made a claim. You will still have a certificate come renewal that states how many years ncb you've accrued, regardless if you passed your test within this time.

I'm yet to see an increase in premium for a non fault claim.

do some quotes Smile when i had my neighbour smash into me when i was parked up the xmas before last, (in the icy snow) my insurance was 50 quid more for declaring that non fault claim, than if i didnt declare it...

perhaps some insurance companies dont use them, or maybe its my age etc (although i am 27)...

I did go via another insurer because they were cheaper, (admiral) but still... mind, admiral want more this year, despite an extra NCB year, than they did last year (wheres the logic) needless to say, i swiped Swift Cover's hand off when i got £475 quote Razz ( i do have a fault claim listed from 2010 Sad so that messes me over a little... ) but my insurance is still cheaper than my mates mother who lives in central brum lol.

I declare 11 claims, I'm yet to find an increase... In fact, getting points lowered my premiums.
