Preparing a bike for SORN?

I'm getting ready to SORN my new bike until March next year, so for six months, and I was wondering if you guys could think of any viable preparations for this?

I know it's a bit of a weird question but I could see it hadn't been asked before and thought I may as well!

I have literally only got as far as thinking I should drain the fuel tank, and hook it up to my Optimate for the duration.. Any other ideas?

It will be garaged, by the way.. (Well in my shed )

Why drain the fuel? leave it in.. recharge battery every couple of weeks..thats it.

Drain the float bowls by all means if it's a carbed bike but leave the fuel tank as full as possible, less air in it the less chance of rust.Stick some fuel stabiliser in it to stop it going "off", chain saw stuff is good and usually cheaper from a Country Store type place. If it's not in a warmish garage then give it a good spraying with ACF50 or Scottoil FS365 to protect it. If you've got paddock stands lift the wheels off the floor, connect to Optimate.

If one of my bikes is going to be off road for a while I.....

1 - Run the bike dry / drain the carbs & tank or put some magic fuel stabiliser in the tank.

2 - Clean bike use degreaser and give it a bloody good clean, chain & sprocket etc. Lube chain up / oil it. Wipe film of oil or spray WD40 on bits that might rust / corrode, benefit from regular lubrication etc. Polish & wax.

3 - Get it on an Abba stand and jack the front wheel carefully off the ground. If no Abba / centre stand / paddock stands check tyre pressures and pump up & keep an eye on.

4 - Hook battery up to charger.

5 - Put bike cover on.



First thing I do when getting bike back out is change oil & filter.

As you're planning to do stuff to the bike, I wouldn't be that conserned. Be a good idea to check tyre pressures, and keep the wheels off the ground if you can.

However I wouldn't worry too much, and I ride a bike that sat around for a year, without any real work done to it.

Charge the battery regularly, take the weight off the wheels with centre stand/paddock stands or roll the bike a bit to change the bearing area supporting the weight of the bike regularly. Wouldn't hurt to run the engine until warm once in a while either. Check and maintain tyre pressures regularly too.

That's about it really.

Okay thanks for the advice guys, as I said, I have an optimate and also a rear paddock stand, will try and acquire a front at some point shortly... Along with some ACF50 as no it is not a warmish shed, no heating source sadly and I'll get some fuel stabiliser too!

And Alex you're welcome to come down any weeknight evening, after this weekend I'm away til I go back to uni... BCF BBQ and then away the following weekend too!

My Thundercat stood for 12 months with this preparation (from the previous owner). I rocked up to buy it and it started and ran sweet as you like. We made sure the chain was oiled, the tyres were inflated and there was oil in it and off I went.

fill up with petrol full (stops rusting), pump tyres to about 45 psi, drain float (if carbed) and remove the battery and store inside then give the bike a good going over with some acf50 (ainti corrosion metal parts only) be a good idea to bounce the shocks once a month to stop the seals from drying out

Just spray with some scot oiler 365. Have you got an old sheet of some kind? stick that over the top then cover with a blanket. Don't forget to pop it up on to the main stand. I sorrn my two bike's every year through the winter. And that's what I do. Come spring some time's she will fire up on the button other time's the battery will need a boost charge. But neather are a problem.

My bike only has a side stand sadly, and I'd rather not leave it on my paddock stands for 6 months solid as they're cheap ones, they'll most likely fall apart
