Its been odd watching Nokia fall from grace the last 1- years or so.

no normal person would even entertain one of their handsets at the minute.

WARNING! TEFLONIAN SIZED ARTICLE!

Crib notes:
Ex Nokia Executive wrote:
Before the Burning Platforms memo, in 2010 Nokia towered over its rivals like very few companies have ever managed in a Fortune 500 size scale. Nokia's smartphones sold more than 2x those of the iPhone and more than 3x as many as Samsung. Today only 18 months later, Nokia is a third the size of the iPhone and one quarter the size of Samsung's smartphones. Never, ever, in any industry, has a global market leader collapsed this comprehensively. This is a world record in destruction of a market leader. Understand what that means. Elop has set a world record in management failure. He is a world record holder in the most incompetent CEO that has ever been. Not just the worst CEO now, but of all time - that is what 'world record' means - and this collapse of Nokia is BY A WIDE MARGIN the biggest collapse of a global Fortune 500 sized company, who was the market leader in its own industry.

Nokia were known to be the best IMO. They were bulletproof, got one a few years ago and it was nice to look at, but just kept locking up, and was laggy as hell. Nobody wants a shite phone like that....

I'd quibble on this point using Kodak as an example.

The old ones were pretty bullet proof. And snake was THE best game ever!! Laughing

However, this is a massive cock up for them when they are already struggling massively against rivals (using that word lightly there).

If they brought out a smart phone that was hardy and had a hint of the old nokias I think it would sell really well, they need to revel in what people like them for, there are memes about nokias and they are known for being hardcore. A drop proof, water proof smartphone would work Thumbs Up

I thought Kodak invented the digital format in the 70's themselves and didn't think it worth perusing. Bellends!

I was there for the start of the nokia revolution. Started at carphone warehouse just as the 3210 was getting popular... The 5110 put them on the map with its changeable fronts, but the 3210 with it's front and back changeable fascias was something else and that's what really rocketed them into the limelight. The 3310 with its uber sleek design and the later 3330 with its WAP connectivity created a frenzy.

They really were the dog's danglies back then, with pretty much every phone they made being better than the last (with the exception of the 8310, which pretty much needed its software flashing the second it was switched on). No matter where you were, or who you were visiting, the fact that every nokia used the same charger guaranteed that someone would have a charger you could borrow should yours run flat.

The absolute darling of the nokia world has to be the 6310i. Sleek, stylish and a 19day battery life meant that every rep in the country had both a 6310i and the car kit for it installed in their vectra diesel.

https://www.cleverkit.com/product_images/s/701/nokia_6310i__58281_zoom.jpg

Seems a shame to see them at the bottom of the heap nowadays.

The last phone I had before my iPhone 4 was a N97. I stuck with Nokia from the 3210 until then but from the N73 onwards I really got pissed off with them. They became laggy, often froze and bits would fall off (scroll key on my N95 for example).

In the end I decided to switch companies as I really didn't see the point in being a fan boi. If they could prove themselves that they are as awesome as they used to be I'd have another Nokia when my iPhone 4 contract runs out.

I still have my 6310i as I have a hands free kit fitted in my car.If I am away greenlaning/racing enduro then I swap the sim card over into my old Nokia as I know that it would be more reliable than my android.

I had one of the early square cornered walkie-talky-stylee ones (can't remember the model) and managed to drive a car over it without bothering it in the slightest. I only gave it up when the battery life finally started going. Sad

Really? I thought everyone knew it was common practice? It's only a small goof that they got caught. In fact, at least people are now talking about them releasing something Smile

Yep, i'd have never heard of the advert or the phone if I didn't see the 'scandal'

Most companies do shit like this I imagine anyway

The context being that Elop has only had 2 years so far to jump Nokia from one burning platform to another. He could take another decade to roast them into bankruptcy and still beat Kodak's record.

yeap they did, they invented the first digital camera (1975!)
https://retrothing.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/05/06/firstkodak.jpg

and they made a range of digital backs for nikons, (edit: in 1990 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodak_DCS_100) if i remember correctly they decided not to persue the market as they thought (correctly i guess) that it would canbilise film sales

I was more picking up on the the "Never, ever" section of the quote rather than the timescale Thumbs Up
