I run a server at home and I'd like to use it as a web server.

I have a folder full of folders of photos.

Does anyone know of any code that will automatically scan this folder of folders and change it into a website with thumbnails?

I know a home server won't be quick, but I only really share them with family so speed isn't an issue.

Happy to pay for the code if required but freeware is always better.

you could check out coppermine gallery, dunno if that's OTT for what you want, but it'll do bulk imports.

It's php/mysql based and iirc can use gd or imagemagik to handle thumbnail creations.

I can probably knock some ruby funkiness together for a smaller, more basic offering, but won't be able to do so until my pooter is back alive. plus it'd require a rails or similar setup.

Or..bash script to scan and convert using gd or imagemagik and go from there

I don't know about anything off the shelf that would do this but it'd be pretty easy to knock up, well easy with PHP. What type of web server do you intend on running?

can run any web server required, linux, windows, apache, tomcat, iis, just lack the skills to write anything myself.

my NAS has no such facility to create webpages, i can access files via a web client but that doesn't help me, i want a fotki/photobucket style system

Windows Home Server has this facility all built in (and has a bunch of extra useful goodies thrown in too) Thumbs Up

WHS V1 is more useful when it comes to hosting and transcoding massive quantities of media across a LAN whereas WHS 2011 is much more capable when it comes to backups and archiving, 2011 also has the slicker web hosting with functionality capable enough to pretty much host your own personal youtube.

Why don't you use google picasa - it has ability to create website from photos, and will scan folders for them. There are lots of plugins that let you create different effects.

Than just put a web server and job done.

Here you have few options: https://www.paulvanroekel.nl/picasa/

If you upload to dropbox (assuming you dont have a huge amount of pictures) it'll do the thumbnails for you I think. And you create albums to share with individuals, etc.

talking about over 30GB of photos, curently pay for Fotki however since they have dropped their retention of original images and my rare use of the service for hot linking i'd rather do something myself from home.

Wasn't going to bother with home server as I can get 2008 R2 from work for free.

I'm not quite sure why having 2008 on hand would rule out WHS? They are two completely different products that happen to be based on the same technology.

WHS will quite literally take a folder of photos and give you a complete secure website with a couple of mouse clicks straight out of the box, no console, command line or extra software needed. It'll do precisely what you are asking both with a ton more finesse and speed than any cloud enabled NAS I've dabbled with and a lot less faffing about compared to using a software web server.

As much as it is Tomy's my first server territory, it's well worth a punt if you CBA setting up something like Apache Thumbs Up

Seb, i'll not rule it out, just looking for a fuss free option, the one i linked to thankfully creates the site on the fly you just keep adding more folders which is what i want.

i'll have a look at your suggestion to.

TLDR

just as a thought, why not use something like Krusador for linux or WINSCP for windows?

its a remote file transfer system but should also be able to be used for viewing files. just make sure certain ports are forwarded and the system has a password on it.

i used both programs from moving stuff via network between my desktop and raspberry pi.

I will recommend installing Joomla
https://www.joomla.org/download.html

Along with Joom Gallery
https://www.en.joomgallery.net/downloads/joomgallery-for-joomla-25/component.html

This can support unlimited galleries and categories and lighbox popups ( facebook style popup galleries ) all configurable with a point and click interface. It will also work on a web server with PHP / mySQL / Apache installed.

XAMPP handles it fine.

I have Ajaxplorer running here. It does loads more than you need (including having a pretty good photoeditor built in) but its very quick to setup and easy to use.

hi chris, my NAS has Ajaxexplorer built in but i can't see any web photo gallery options? only web based file management which isn't what I am after (will have remote access to the server so unnecessary)

The version I have installed provides adjustable thumbnails (zoom sliders) and previews for image files, so yeah, it is a bastardisation of the product but it does cover most of what seperate gallery software does.
