Hey guys,

My sister in law just bought a phone of eBay and it won't charge. It was advertised as being fully working but it has arrived faulty and surprise surprise the seller is impossible to get in touch with.

She paid around £ 150 via PayPal.

So far she has reported to eBay that she cant get hold of the seller and they have said they are going to try.

What else can I do to help out?

She's scraping min wage and saved for ages to get this phone so I really want to help her out as she's totally gutted. I hate these shitty sellers!!

Hope someone can help,

Thanks

There's not really too much you can do unfortunately. Raise a claim with Paypal about it not being as described and they should hopefully freeze the funds from coming out the account, then re-pay you should it come to that.

Alternatively, you know his email address. Try tracking him down on the web, getting information about him, address, see if you can work out his email password, try log into paypal and reset the account, then refund the money to yourself.

Though that's a long shot Razz

start a dispute over paypal. Claim in the messages box that its not working, if the seller doesnt repond within a week, i think you can raise it to the next level, and paypal will decide the outcome. They almost always side with the buyer.

Claim through paypal, worst that will happen is you're out the return postage. very little chance paypal won't find in your favour.

Yes.
I wouldn't even worry. At all.
Start a dispute. If he doesn't fix it or reply you will likely end up with your money back AND the phone, which you can then sell as broken.

Meaning you win.

i generally find when selling technology on ebay its best to get a known shop like carphone warehouse or a cashgenerator store or somewhere like that to sign something saying that the phone has been tested and is either working/not working and send a photocopy of it with the product or upload to ebay/paypal when a dispute arrives.

for the damaged phone. see if you can get something like that.

this is probably not right but

if it doesn't hold a charge and you want to send it back would it not just make sense to buy a new battery? you could probably get 2 for the price of return postage

If it gets to the point where the phone is sent back. Make sure you send it via a trackable method.

You think it would be the battery?

I don'r know about this sort of thing to be honest. Don't want to go to the effort of buying a battery if its something else that is wrong with it.

Does it work when plugged into the charger?
If not, have you tried a different charger/lead?
Does it power up at all from the battery?
Can you check the battery with a multimeter? (there are 3 contacts on them usually, try all combinations)
With the battery out and the phone on charge, is there power to the battery contacts in the phone?

What make/model?

Phone = xperia play

When plugged in with various chargers it still does not charge. However the phone does show it has battey life remaining but it just doesn't go up or down with charger in.

Don't have a multi meter

Even if the phone was working perfectly there's still a 99.9% chance you would win a dispute via paypal. It's not even worth thinking/stressing about. Just start a dispute and you're guaranteed your money back. As a seller you're open to more scams than a buyer.

Everyone is frothing at the mouth a bit too much, calm down ebay will sort it. How long has it been? For all you know the guy has gone on holiday and was unaware of the fault. Putting up the guys address has done you know favours IMO and if anything could work against you.

PS if you sister so strapped for cash why is she spending £150 on a phone? You can easily get one brand new for £20. I was at a boot sale at the weekend where there were hundreds
for under a fiver.
