Unexplained Vibes!!

Hi All,

I dropped my new (3 weeks Today) Street Triple R into Triumph on Wednesday with just shy of 600 miles on it for it's first service.

Prior to dropping it in I phoned the service manager and made him aware of an unusual noise between 3000 - 4000 RPM when under load. Now I don't know much about Triumph Triple engines and wasn't sure if the sound was some kind of engine characteristic

When I dropped the bike off the first thing the Service Manager and the sales guy who originally sold it to me was to jump all over my Crash Bungs and say that they could be the reason for the noise / vibration. They then promptly recomended R&G ones at £120.00

Anyway after the service on Thursday they did a test ride and gave me a call shortly after. They advised that the noise / vibration was still there. I said I would drop the original bolts back in on Friday as they still felt the crash Bungs were to blame.

On Friday they replaced the original bolts/engine mounts and called me again to state that there was no difference.

Today they have called me again to say that they have checked all they can on the bike. All bolts loosened and re-torqued, Wheels Balanced and Chain tensions checked etc but still no joy.

So they will be contacting Triumph Factory / warranty on Monday for further advice.

So my question is...........

Has anyone had any experience in dealing with Triumph on a Warranty basis and should I be concerned about anything?

The bike has 99% of the time I have rode it been kept below 6000 rpm and only been above to pull away from traffic / overtake.

Triumph dealer called me today to advise me that after speaking with Triumph H/Q they still do not know what is causing the vibration.

The dealer feels that whatever it is, it is not detrimental to the bike

Advised to continue with the 'Running in' period and increase the Revs to see how it goes?

Any Thoughts?

I get something similar on my Triple (2012) - think it did it from day 1.

When I'm riding at about 3k rpm I get a vibration, and a little chatter, that dies off once the engine gets up to about 4k rpm.

I put it down to the clutch - if I sit on the bike with it running at tick-over and let the clutch in and out I can feel the vibration come on as the clutch is released, which is apparently "normal", but you can also here the difference when revving the engine with clutch in/out.

I've been hunting all over the internet for someone that knows what it is, or if it's an issue, as such, but without much resolution - so if you find out what it is let me know.

I don't think fitting crash bungs that weren't R&G would be the cause.....nice try for a quick few quid though!

I have aftermarket bungs on my engine, front forks and swing arm. I have no problems. I don't sit down at 3 k though, I wonder if that is slightly low for loading the engine up?

I'll take it out tomorrow and see if I can replicate it on mine & let you know.

I get it just as you go through the revs, not just when slow moving at 3k, but maybe it's a normal quirk on these bikes with some people not even thinking anything of it.

I just finished running it in last week, so maybe I won't notice it so much now I can use the full rev range.

My previous bike was a 2003 zx6r and that rattled, ticked and clunked all the time.....so in comparison, this is nothing!!

The bike went back in last week to have the MAP & Adaptions checked and Triumph stated that they cannot find anything wrong with the bike. I rode a demonstrator whilst I was there and it felt a bit smoother in lower revs and although it had a faint resemblance to the noise / vibration I feel on my bike, it was not as bad.

I have now also took a bike into an independent bike garage who did a quick check on it and said that in their opinion there was no problems with the engine at this stage.

I have been told to keep using super unleaded and see how it goes, the bike has 1850 miles on it now.

Yeah, I think the crash bungs were never the issue. I have put some R&G bungs on it now.

Irony is that while the cheaper crash bungs were off I dropped the thing whilst putting it away in the garage

Brake Pedal bent, scratched side of the engine, broken indicator and scratched mirror casing. Cost me about £80 to put right.

I really think it's low down pinking / detonation that's the issue.

** Update **

Things have not changed with the bike so I arranged to get it put on a Dyno today so the vibration could be replicated whilst off the bike.

Sure enough between 3-4k rpm the vibration was there and the guy running the machine couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. He said it could be anything from a loose baffle in the exhaust vibrating right upto a the crank being out of balance.

Also, the bike only returned 93.6 BHP on the machine and the engineer expected 100 BHP +

So this afternoon I have been back to Triumph, had a chat with the guy that sold the bike to me and he has agreed to start some in depth investigation into the reason for the vibrations (and hopefully power drop)

It goes in next week but it may be in for a number of days, I'll keep you posted.

Turns out the wheel HP @ 93.6 BHP was in fact about correct compared with other googled dyno results. Factoring in 10-15% reduction from published crank BHP.

Still taking it on Sat though for vibration investigation.
