For sale is my 1993 CBR600F, it is on 54,000 miles and has been my sole method of transport for the last two years. I've looked after it as well as I can, but it's been stolen twice and attempted a further two times, plus been my daily commuter through the centre of London. It has it's fair share of issues. That said I would ride it from here to Scotland today and trust it to get me there and back without issue. It has never been crashed, even when stolen. It has a long MOT, it is declared SORN but I will happily tax it for the buyer if you wish to ride it away. There are some issues so read the description well. I have put the sale price at £500 but make me an offer and see what I say. There are the makings of a good bike here for somebody with the time and tools to make it so.
Engine and Electrics
I bought the bike on 32,000 miles and for the past 2 years it has been a testament to Honda reliability, it has had regular oil and filter changes and a couple of cam chain tentioners and other than that has just kept on going. There have been two faults with the bike in that time. The first was the infamous reg/rec blowing. It actually melted the connector block when it went. I spliced a Triumph Speed Four reg/rec in place and it has been perfect since. The second was the death of 2nd gear, I haven't got the space to fix it myself so I've just ridden around it, skipping straight to 3rd when accelorating. I other than that there isn't really a huge amount wrong with the engine mechanically, there is a massive array of paperwork to show that it has been looked after, and also a stack of old MOT's to confirm mileage. There is a slight rattle/tick on the over-run, I'm almost certain that it is just the cam chain tentioner on it's way out again, I refuse to spend £40 on a bike I'm about to sell though! Do any research on this age CBR and you will soon realise that CCT's are just another consumeable with this engine! It's a 30 minute job to replace. Lastly there is no ignition barrel/steering lock, after replacing it twice I realised it made no difference to whether the bike was stolen or not. I just use a screwdriver now! Everything else is fine, all of the lights and indicators work as they should, there is a blown bulb behind the rev counter but it's never bothered me.
Cosmetics/bodywork/chassis
When I got the bike it was more or less spotless, honestly I've seen 3 year old bikes looking tattier than my CBR did, alas it is not so spotless anymore! The thefts and commute have taken their toll. There are marks on almost all panels and the tank. There is residue from fingerprint dust that may come off with some elbow grease, but has survived my half hearted attempts. The panels are all held togther well though, and for a 20 year old bike there are surprisingly few screws missing. The bodywork doesn't rattle or shake and it generally feels well put together as a Honda should!
The fuel cap needs replacing. The second time it was stolen they pulled the tank barrel to refuel it, it was turnable with a screwdriver for a while but it doesn't sit flush anymore so is held down with tape.
There is a single bar-end mirror instead of the standard mirrors. I don't have the orignials anymore. If you've never used a mirror like this before you will probably underestimate how much you can see with one, I know I did.
The frame is straight, the bike has never been crashed to my knowledge, even when stolen it didn't go shiney side down.
The rear suspension linkage could do with greasing but for a fifty thousand mile shock it really is doing well (far better than the ZZR I had before!). The front suspension is also fine, no leaking from the seals. The forks have been dropped a little through the yolks to sharpen up the steering a little, it made a noticeable difference for me but it would take 2 people 15 minutes to get them back to standard if you don't like it.
I recently rebuilt the front brake calliper and replaced the front and rear brake pads, the front disks are good, the rear will need replacing at some point but didn't get mentioned on the MOT, I had an issue in the past with the rear brake binding a little, it freed itself off after a week though and hasn't been a problem since though I'm sure it could do with a rebuild at some point, wouldn't be on an urgent fix list though.
There is a tiny tear in the seat, around an inch long and right at the back, never bothered me!
Consumables
The tyres are Pilot Road 2's and are a few months old, I'd estimate around 3,000 miles, there is no real visible wear, no sign of squaring off. I had to use tyre repair foam to fix a puncture in the rear tyre around 1000 miles or so ago, it said temporary use only on the can but it's been fine so far, to be honest I would leave it in for the life of the tyre if I was keeping it but the buyer may wish to get the tyre properly repaired, my local tyre shop said they'd charge an extra 15 minutes labour to clean out the foam but other than that it would be fine to repair at standard cost. The chain could do with being replaced, the o ring on a link died so that link clunks as it goes around the sprocket. The sprockets will last another chain if you are on a budget.
