Hi, my bike is a naked sv 650 and has had a hard year and is now stripped ready for the anual rebuild ready for spring, along with all the usual maintanace things, oil filters ect im going to upgrade suspension and brakes this time round.

the front brakes with good discs pads and well bled with 5.1 fluid still feel crap. i v had a look to see which brakes calipers will fit as an upgrade along with braided hose and find the tokicos fitted to alot of 90s kwaks and the tl1000 can be had cheaply,

i understand these calipers are known for seizing up pretty quickly and i think this is due to the inside face of the calipers to not be coated and suffer the "furring"

would these from the link below fit to standard sv forks without and modification.

Have you tried change your brake pads or set up suspension?

I don't think that new callipers would be any better if you've got too soft suspension setting or some long-life brake pads. Fluid isn't really the key, you could also get some braided brake hoses. Thumbs Up

well the suspension is stripped atm ready to be rebuilt, i have rebuilt the brakes this year using good pads and bled properly.i have not uyet found an sv with good brakes.

although when these 6 pots are set up correctly they are far superior to the sv brakes.

6 pots are poor IMO anyhow.. Most folk change them to 4 pots.Any reason you are using 5.1 fluid and not 4.0?
As stated getting new calipers wont help.. You might have fitted cheap poor seals,, there might be air in the system still,You might have a piston sticking,A piston might have a nick in it and is catching on a seal.
Standard rubber hoses can swell and bulge..

Just go through each bit and take your time..

*Im sure gsxr calipers fit the SV but not 100%..4 pots will give you a better feel IMO*

This is something I'm going to do, since I have a few other bits to repair on old blue. Typed in Nissin 4 pot onto ebay... Not sure these are the right ones though... Nissin 4 Pot

Could you tell us, how does your front brake behave/work? What does it do and what do you want it to do?

ok, with new pads cant remeber what make but they were ebc or something good quality, good discs and well bled, the lever is hard with no spongy ness.

for examle when im giving it some propper beans if i need to brake hard theres just no real bite to them as if thers always brake fade or if i got wd40 on the discs thats what they feel like,

iv ridden friends bikes with braided hosing ect and there just the same theres nothing to them.

1200 bandit or GSXR750 Nissins seem to be the common choice.

I've ridden:
'88 GPz550: single cylinder callipers, stock hoses and it was alright. It's got anti-dive though.
'99 CB500: standart brembo twin cylinder calliper with braided brake hose and some high friction pads. The lever was hard as rock and there was absolutely no feeling about, what's going on during braking, I would never ride it in rain. Very agressive front brake with that kick in effect. When I braked on the traffic lights, last minute braking, the front wheel got stuck on dry tarmac with the bike upright.
'91 CB1: my actual motorcycle, standart twin cylinder calliper, tokico I think, with standart hose with pads in the middle of the friction scale, don't remeber. It brakes good, I can actually feel and reduce the pressure on the lever. I ride it flat out only and I'm still alive. I use two fingers to brake.
'99 CBR900RR: two 4 piston callipers, stock hoses, some race pads, lever was soft like a rotten tomato, brakes were very effective and I could brake in front of a corner from like 150mph with just one finger on the lever.

So now, I don't know what defines good brakes, but it's definitely not one with lever harder than the road you're on with on/off effect. The best brakes I've tried are definitelly on that CBR900RR, soft lever with good pressure response.

Edit: You also have to calculate with the frame and body position on the bike, of course.

what year is the sv?
I have had no problems with stock ones on a friends '01. They were more than sufficient considering the rest of the bike. There was enough power there to lift the back wheel off the ground or lock the front if you were being ambitious.
I would suggest a full clean and rebuild.
