Now; it's only a few days away. Pretty confident i can do it...
BUT.

1. Do you have to put your bike on a center stand with one hand on handlebars and one on the back? Or can you do it however it works for you?

2. Do they check your bike? My bike has a FEW defects at the moment. And not enough time to fix them, only realised today, and the test is on Thursday. Can't change/rearrange test because it's a 'short-notice' booking and can't be changed. Defects are; possible slow leak in tires, fork seals MAY be going.

3. Are these ACCEPTABLE footwear for the test;
https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41%2BP1pUHPXL._SY395_.jpg

Thank you for all your help up to and including this post, both in forums and chat.

Found another issue with bike; When i'm not revving or accelerating, and just drifting to a slower speed (coming up to traffic lights) then i get this rattle inside the engine. Maybe i'm being paranoid but it's not HUGE loud, but noticeable. Think maybe something innocent or should i start looking at taking it all apart?

I'd use the side stand if your bike has one, if you've got a valid tax disc & insurance I can't see it being a problem (oh & brakes are important too Laughing )
If you can get boots that would probably be better, at least something that covers the ankles.

Best of luck gent. Thumbs Up

I had (and passed!) my mod 1 on Wednesday (failed mod 2!), so at least I'm qualified to answer this question! Embarassed

I believe its a question of how it works for you so long as you keep it safe - are you referring to the first exercise (pushing the bike)?

I did the tests with a big tear across the front tyre (not sidewalls) which I found the day before. I chose to risk it, and I've changed the tyre now. The bloke didn't check my bike to my immense relief!

The footwear won't work if you have no other protection other than helmet - see the official Youtube vids as I think I saw it here -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf8qoQ5d3rA

It would be a good idea to watch all of these.

Pushing the bike, i'm alright at. It's putting it on the center stand.
I have a side stand but i swear the test is to put it on a center stand?

I have gloves, helmet, and leather motorbike jacket.

I can MAYBE get some military boots on Wednesday.

The problems with my bikes can be resolved by me putting air in the tires in a garage near the test center 45 minutes before the test.

1. Side stand.
2. Pump up tyres, wipe down forks.
3. Unless you fancy a court care to force the ignorant mongs to stop setting themselves up as legislators, then no, probably not.

Guide to suitable clothing

As a general guide the following is an indication of the minimum level of clothing acceptable:

textile or leather motorcycle jacket
motorcycle gloves

The following are examples of clothing that are not acceptable:

lightweight training shoes
canvas basket ball trainers
any form of clothing with areas of exposed skin
shell suit or lightweight tracksuit
distressed ripped jeans
lightweight fleece or hoody
no gloves or skiing gloves

Used the side stand on the ER6 & GS500 I used for Mod 1 (failed first time around Laughing ). I find the side stand a lot easier to use, whichever is easiest go with......Don't make it harder for yourself on the day. Thumbs Up

I have a side stand only, that's certainly not an issue. You can use only what you have!

You might squeak by with your protection. I would say that trainers would be safer than unfamiliar hobnails from a surplus place, simply because you'd have better control of the bike.

On the subject of pressure, you are BOUND to be asked about carrying a pillion, read up on a few likely maintenance/safety check questions as well.

Have you considered booking an hour or two's tuition?

It might be painful for the pocket but very beneficial in getting you to that mod 2.

I'll try to get some boots for Thursday.
I'll deffo pump my tires up and give my forks a wipe before the test.

I'll try JUST putting it on side stand for the test. So they won't ask me to use my center stand?

IDEA - If you're going to an army surplus place you might think of getting some putties to cover your ankles.

https://img407.imageshack.us/img407/628/captmainwaring.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Imageshack might block the pic if I delete that following bit - I'll leave it be..

The centre stand will not be mentioned if you do not have one.

PS Where are you? I'm near Brighton and have some nice size 8 motorcycle boots if you're that size.

Hundreds of miles away mate, but thanks for the offer, i'm also size 11 so no luck.

I'm an Army Cadet and so a lot of battered boots pass through my circle of friends, i'm sure i can pinch some off my mates for a day. I use trouser twists for mine Razz

I DO have a center stand. That's my point. But i can't seem to put it up with one hand on handlebars and one on rear of bike. I use my foot to hold the stand on the ground and sort of pull the handlebars up and back using BOTH hands.

Hehe, I'm 11 too! Got the boots as part of a set (the 1 piece leather suit fits like a glove!)

I've been a Royal Marine cadet in my time, did the mini field gun! Well I was 11..

I see about the centre stand. They had them on the CG125s at the training place when I did the CBT.

Look for a spike which sticks out at an odd angle - when pushing the stand down, put you foot and your weight on it, and push back gently on the bike - that should do it. One of the instructors was in her fifties and 8 stone! Its all in the technique.

I am sure you can put the bike on the stand however you so wish.

Military issue boots will be fine, I would not risk going in trainers.

Yes. Practice makes perfect.
I struggled to get a 50cc moped on its' centre stand during my CBT.

Now I find it easy to do the CB500 at twice the weight.

Though it's still unnerving.

I would use the side stand if available. My CG didn't have one.

On my last mod1 I had an out of towner test me.My instructor had always got us to use the centre stand in training,so I was going to do that. But the instructor actually said to me,no need to do that, just put it on the side stand and get on with the proper part of the test.lol

You don't get extra points for putting it on the centre stand, you can only fail for nobbing it up.

Went to local motorbike place, got 'Goop' put in my tires? Seems to be better though so woo. But apparently it'll cost £100+ quid to get my fork seals replaced (product and labour) :o

I really need to learn to take my bike apart myself. :/

Getting some boots tomorrow morning because the place had shut when i got there today -.-

Failed

4 Minors

3 = Observations
1 = 49 kph on E brake.

1 Major - 42/46 on Avoidance.

One of the observations i repute but no point arguing, i failed if it was or wasn't.

THING is. I did what everyone told me not to do, and was go into 3rd gear. I got the 46/49 in 3rd gear but in 2nd, only 42.

Does this mean i should stay in 3rd gear and hope for next time, or keep trying in two.

ALSO the next time i can book it is Tuesday 18th or Monday 24th. Do you think i should get my bike fixed and do it Monday or try to do it again on Tuesday and THEN get my bike fixed.

Bike needs new fork seals btw.

Sorry 'bout that!

I say get that test booked again, and regarding 3rd gear - do what's best for you to get through it.

Maybe it's the issues i'm having with my bike atm but when in 2nd gear, it's hard to get to 30mph in a straight line, on a normal road, and takes far too long.

I think i'll try again with 2nd gear and if required to do it again, 3rd.

I'll try to book it for Tuesday and got onto the man i know to try and do my forks for me. Smile

You definitely need to stay in 2nd gear.

Make sure you position yourself well round the bend and you should be going 20mph as you come round, then as soon as you straighten hit the throttle open....but DO NOT ease off the throttle till you get past the speed trap....I get the feeling you are coming off the throttle beforehand because your concerned about the hazard avoidance swerve cone...DON'T...you will naturally swerve around it no matter how quick you're going.

Either that or you are exiting the bend way way too slow. (i did the above and I hit the Speedo at 52,52 and 51)

Better luck next time and make sure you do your obs...absolutely no excuse for missing them really other than laziness.(and maybe nerves)

You'll probably find you'll be more relaxed next time and put right your wrongs.

Debatable...
Mine will not do 32mph in 2nd (won't rev high enough)
I had to enter the bend in 3rd doing around 20mph and half way through open the throttle some more. I passed the speed-trap at 53kp/h doing it this way.

Just find a quiet car park, mark out a basic bend with markers for the speed-trap etc and practice using 2nd & 3rd to see what gives the best results.
