PostPosted: 16:09 - 10 Sep 2012    Post subject: Examiner, please answer ASAP! Reply with quote

Hello there, Module 2 tomorrow morning. Feeling "excited" about it to say the least. I have had a days training and I am confident I know what I'm doing. However I really need one question answered by someone who KNOWS for certain about the current rules.

When turning right (say from a major road onto a minor, just a simple right turn) do you pull to the right side of the lane your in, thus allowing traffic to pass? For some reason I recall my instructor saying that you don't do it any more, you essentially act as a car, and sit in the middle of the road until you turn.

Can someone please clarify the situation, as I'm really not sure.

Thanks for any responses, and please only give an answer if you are certain you're correct, my licence may well depend on it!

Thanks for any assistance,

Tom

It mentions positioning your vehicle as not to obstruct traffic whilst waiting to turn in the Highway Code.

Should position yourself towards the white line. Not only does it allow traffic to pass, but it also shows more clearly what you're intending to do.

Didn't a lad on here fail this week for not being positioned correctly while turning, so much so that the examiner positioned himself up the outside of him?

(and for doing 40 in a 30 of course)

We don't have any examiners here, unless they've been keeping quiet.

The procedure I was taught, was to:

- Check mirror.

- Right indicate.

- Shoulder check.

- Then move over to the right, so the bike is positioned between the center of your lane and the white line.

- Another shoulder check before you make the turn.

- And then turn into the junction.

If it's a turn with a waiting box in the middle of the road, this will be slightly different and remember not to go into it until you've passed the solid white line, otherwise thats an insta fail.

Yup, if turning right keep bias to the right (just left of the centre line). Turning left, keep bias to the left. As Sidewinder says, DONT forget those lifesaver checkers. Wink

Best of luck gent, let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up

yes he did Sad It resulted in a 'serious' fault meaning an automatic fail, I was dead in the centre of my lane but apparently I should've been over toward the white line Confused

Passed! So bloody happy considering the cost/new rules coming in.
I had 7 minors, which is pretty insane :S I only got 1 the first time I tried the test. My steering was a little erratic, and I did forget to immediately cancel the indicator when pulling away. However these things I know are because of the nerves (like I said I was better the first time round for silly things like that).

But hey-ho despite the minors I'm just thrilled, and now I don't have to worry about getting any non-test habits, I can actually learn to ride safely (i.e: closer to the white line) on the road. Utterly thrilled thank you for all your help guys!

P.s: anyone got £5,000 spare? Wink

Well done mate.My examiner said after the test that he only gives minors to show you where your riding could improve a little and should not be taken as a bad thing Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the comments, I've actually got more happy about it as the days gone on and It's sunk in. Started to really feel the whole "I've actually got my bike licence, YESSSSS!".

As for bike... I really have no idea haha, I'm headed off to Bristol for university later this month, and I'm not entirely clear on whether I'll even have anywhere to park! Aside from that I need to get some money together (although I should have about £900 from selling my current 125 as it's in really lovely working order).

So in order of "realisticness", here are the bikes I've considered, please do give me your 10 cents on any of them you know anything about, I do so love to chat bikes Very Happy

1. CB500: I've heard they're as reliable as hell and not too expensive, a nicely maintained second hand one is something i've seriously considered.
2. Suzuki Bandit: perhaps my perception is wrong but I kind of see them as the slightly sportier CB500, is that moronic? I just guessed as you see a fair few about, they can't be all too expensive secondhand, nor can parts be hard to come by...
3. Yamaha Diversion (only the latest models though) now we're in to "where are you planning to get the money?" territory, but I've heard loads of good things about them, and frankly they're sexy.
4. And my current fantasy bike would be a Honda Hornet, there's just something about those latest models that I really REALLY like, although I'm not sure the Diversion's THAT far behind, truth be told.

By the way, what does FTFY mean?

All the best,

Tom (one happy, happy bastard)

In all honesty, at £900 or thereabouts, I wouldn't worry too much. Get whatever looks like it's been well looked after.

I have a CB5 and I am happy with it. Done 3k miles since DAS. It is comfortable with my female friend as pillion, though I would suggest something a bit bigger if you're on the large side (we weigh 120-130kg combined).

If I ever get bored of it, I think I'd go for a CBR600F rather than the 'slow' 600's.

nice one, CB500 all the way. From that list, best bike by miles. Not remotely tarty but a timeless, reliable, cheap workhorse. Never be collectible, but people will appreciate them for ever. Also maybe consider an NTV600/650, similar characteristics, plus shaft drive, slightly more torque and a nicer noise. I ride a Revere and I go everywhere on it, cost me 450 quid and I've already spent nearly twice that on petrol, which at 65mpg all the time equals a lot of miles in 6 months!

Enjoy your license, and breath a massive sigh of relief on January 13th/get pissed and feel sorry for everyone taking a test from then on Twisted Evil

Edit:

By the way, such fine details as road positioning on a major to minor junction, things like that are often used as an 'excuse' to fail an incompetent rider if they performed no other major errors yet were still clearly not ready to be licensed. Examiners make a judgement and then will find evidence to support it, the lad that failed for waiting to turn right towards the right line probably displayed nervous, unsure riding, the examiner decided he was unfit, and found a single action to fail him for a generally insecure ride, I wouldn't sweat it too much. As long as you're not violating law, or highway code then you have an arguable case.
