What ever happened to bartering? I have been looking for a cheap car, have been to see loads, but most are not as described, but when you give an offer there is no movement on price. Normally you go a few hundred less than they are asking and you work to the middle, but no. All think that they will get the price asked for, some even state no offers. I wouldn't mind but you know that they are making money with the sale and while the car is sitting around they are loosing money.

I love bartering, it's part of the fun of buying second hand stuff. Sometime people do take the piss tho, I had a car for sale for £450. A guy came to look at it and said "I can only offer you the scrap value of £80 for it"

He was politely told to piss off.

Is that not called haggling? I was under the impression that to barter was to offer goods or services of an equal value rather than currency.

Yes, you are right. You can haggle whilst bartering though.

Indeed. Bartering is a very misused word.

I personally can't be fucked with haggling. I'm selling my car at the moment. It's for sale for £750. The first person to give me £750 drives the car away. It's not rocket science. If it was open to negotiation it would say £750 ono. It did in fact cost me £750 to put it where it is (as in running, saleabe and MOTed with four legal tyres on). I'm making nothing at £750, it's my break even point.

If I was up for bartering I would say "Or swap for good quality wood burning stove, four axe heads and a barrel of apples.".

I was accepting offers on the van I sold recently and I was inundated with cheeky bastards offering less than half of what it was for sale for (as in a running, working van with 6 months MOT and tax for £500). It would be one thing offering say 350-400 and I'd have talked turkey but I had people offering £200. I told one guy that I'd get £250 by weighing it in and cashing in the tax and the cheeky cunt offered me £270 then got humpty when I sold it to someone else without getting back to him.

So. No. I have concluded that in the era of the internet, accepting offers attracts arseholes like dogshit attreacts flies. The car is for sale for £750 and I'm not even replying to anyone who makes an offer for less.

I love haggling.

Whenever I sell bikes I put the price up a could £100 to make room for the eventual haggle.

This times a million. I hate haggling. I've sold plenty of guitars, mountain bikes/parts and other stuff and the amount of offers you inevitably get that are well below what the item is reasonably worth is ridiculous. I started putting no offers on most of the stuff I sell a while ago and while I still get all the stupid offers I just don't entertain them. I've even had people agreeing on a price via email/phone then trying to haggle when they come to pick the thing up. No dice from me. I don't care if you had to spend £10 on petrol to come and pick it up!!

It's the same the other way too. If I see something I want advertised second hand for a price I'm not prepared to pay I won't contact the seller. If they've put ono in the advert then yeah I might make an offer that I think is fair without going crazy but otherwise I'll just let it go as all the tooing and froing does my head in!

I've noticed a growing trend in people advertising things for sale second hand and just putting "Offers" on the advert instead of a price. If I see that then I'm not going to bother even looking. It just screams to me that the seller knows what it's worth but wants to see if someone offers them more than they thought it's worth. Just put a price on it!

I was looking for an air rifle and all i got was that. I dotn even bother contacting them. Its probably some idiot who wont sell the item unless someone offers them a really high price for it.

This thread reminds me of when i was buying my bike. I was ready to haggle the guy down to £900, when my mam said "will you take £970?". Not taking her again Rolling Eyes

to advertise something "no offers" is ok by me

otherwise you put the price up at least £100 above what you'll accept and then remove it when made an offer, there's no difference

the seller gets what they'll accept, the buyer pays what they want to pay

Buy this one:

No wait, he's a complete fucking tool if he thinks a Gamo can hit a barn door at 100 yards.

When it comes to haggling, I cab usually get a bit off and price things with a bit of haggle-room. I've never actually exchanged chickens or marrows or things like that for stuff though.
