A friend of mine is looking for a large capacity single cylinder bike engine for a project of his. Anything 400cc upwards. My first suggestion was the drz400 but these engines are quite expensive. Anyone got any good suggestions for cheap single cylinder engines.

Thanks in advance,
Will

The Rotax was my first thought - well, I actually thought of the BMW F650ST/Funduro but that uses the Rotax.

The old Rotax engines are solid. I think the new ones are made in china.

You don't specify the purpose.

If it was to be performance orientated, I'd look at a Husaberg 650 or a big 2 stroke.
If it was economy, then maybe a BMW F650 single.

First off, it's going to be a lot of work as a moped traditionally has the engine as the swingarm - meaning no space to put a conventional engine.
Then, I'd be considering a light version, maybe compact.

Why over 400cc? A very arbitrary variable to choose an engine on. You could get a 125cc engine that makes more power than 400cc.

I'd be maybe thinking about an enduro 250/300cc 2 stroke as these are compact and light weight.

Not a big single like that then, an NSR engine.

Remember a BMW or rotax engine will have the final drive on the right, a Japanese bike will have it on the left.

BMW uses the Rotax on the 650. The new F650 is the 800 twin, detuned. The orld Rotax 650 is now called G650. Confusing as hell.

The new single engine is also made for BMW in China, it isn't a genuine Rotax (or in-house BMW).

Personally I'd opt for a pre-2007/2006 model.

Ja, mentioned that earlier. So I assume the new G650 and sertao will be junk compared to the former F650 GS and the Dakar variant.

The lower price tag on the G650 would also suggest that you are getting the chink crap you pay for. I notice BMW dealers are also not punting the G650, and recommending the F650 with the 800 twin.

So in effect BMW has discontinued the 650 and is relying on their 800 twin. I guess it is why the removed the dakar name, and now have the sertao. Sounds closer to Mao.
