I've recently acquired an 06 plate Pan European, which was a driving examiner bike in a previous life, so high mileage, mostly at lower speeds. I've not has a good chance to get stuck into it yet, but a quick ride around the block has worried me as the gearshift pedal is really stiff, and I can't get it beyond second.

Like I said I haven't had a chance for a proper tinker and a look through the Haynes book of lies, but just wondering if anyone had any ideas straight off?

Is there a linkage from the gear lever to the engine? If so strip, clean and grease it.

An 06 so that'd be the 1300.
Also check oil. If too full or too old can cause problems.

You might want to check out my-mc.com, specifically the ST1300 topics. You can also delve into the old my-mc.com forum for information. Search on either of these to see if your issue reported/solved. If not don't be afraid to sign up and ask on there. They are quite friendly although replies not as immediate as on here due to the different nature of the members there.

Agreed with Chris Red, I had this on the Suzuki and a mate on his ZX9R, both had a load of gunk in the shift pedal pivot so a swift strip/clean/grease sorted them Thumbs Up An instructor bike will have been out in all weathers so it could well be gunged up.

If the bike has been dropped on the left side then the selector shaft may well be bent - even if the gear lever is straight.

Can you also check the fluid in the clutch? When was it last changed and how dark is it? Do you have air in the lines? (try bleeding, ott article here).

I also know on the ST1100 the seals can go on the slave cylinder so you get air into the system (but not so it leaks strangely). I say this because I need to look at mine, clutch doesn't like being used in traffic as bite point moves back to the bars to such an extent doesn't disengage. Leave if for 20 minutes or so and back to normal!

Not saying you have this issue but on mine before it gets really bad it makes gear selection really hard. Like the gear lever is stuck as you describe.

Getting worse over a period of months trouble shifting down gears when still cold got worse. Worried I Googled symtoms and found that a linkage from nearside shift pedal, under the engine, to offside gear selector can become dry and stiff! Spray lubrication of the linkage joints was like getting a new gearbox! The linkage is exposed to spray, wet, dirt and dust so just needs a bit of care and attention! (Like us all!)! Problem solved!
