Bloody Caravanners!

Has anyone else noticed that hardly any caravanners bother with those mirror extensions these days?

I was following one today that was really taking the piss, I dunno if it was small mirrors as standard or a wide caravan but when I was tailing it I couldn't see mirrors at all. And I was moving out to the side to try and get in the drivers vision too, not just sitting up the guys chuff. When I overtook I was in the middle of the other lane and it took until around half way along the 'van before i could see (and therefore be seen in) the mirrors.

That's a huge blindspot, and a real safety issue IMO. Is it not a legal requirement to have those extended mirrors?

I agree McJamweasel as I have been in a similar situation. Mirror extensions should be compulsory on those big bastards!

I agree they have massive blind spots.
On the other hand I travel up to north Wales quite often and in the summer I have been filtering in between the traffic on the narrow mountain roads only to have to duck quick as I pass a caravan. Those massive sticky out mirrors can give you quick a scare.

I once asked a caravanner about the mirrors. Was told they shake like hell and are next to useless. Now that rings a bell. Also they were not required if the driver can use the car rear view mirror to see out of the back of the caravan. YEA, how many have you seen that do not have a curtain in the back window.
The best remark was that the police rarely pull caravanners over because they cause traffic congestion.

I am now off out to look for a really large bike with no mirrors and a curtain.

As a Caravanner I fully agree with you, Caravanners should be able to see behind them, and some people take the p!55

It is not true that Caravan extension mirrors are useless, like all things there are good ones and bad ones. When I am hitched up I can see the back corners of my Caravan in my mirrors, and that is about 26 feet further back than the back of the car. I also have my front and rear blinds up, so I have visibility through the Caravan as well.

.....but dare I say it, Caravanners are just like Motorcyclists.......some are responsible and some aren't

Since I (and by 'I' I mean my dad) owns one of those "big bastards" he does not use extensions as its not an legal requirment and has big enough mirrors to see behind the van. Also caravans and caravaners are not all bad but i do agree that the oaps towing big vans at reli slow speeds and pissing everyone off is annoying. But my dad is probally the most decent caravaners as if he spots a bike on the road he will move over and do whatevers necassery to let you pass. He even nearly stopped dead on the dual carrigeway to flash a biker over the since it was hectic traffic. Probally as soon as I get my bike thou I will join the rest of you in the war against caravans.
