I can't think of one of those use cases I'd find useful, and I live in the shell every day. Not to say some of it might make some specky nerds go 'ooh' but really, it's just fluff.
The problem for me would be when I'm logged into another computer that hasn't got Xiki installed, and I wanted to do the showy stuff, but couldn't, then cursed my old-fashioned simple shell for a moment, but then got on with doing whatever it was...
I bet it's bloody heavy as a shell too. |

In answer to "why can't windows do this" it can, install xiki and away you go.
As unknownstuntman says though, what is the point? I used redhat's shell daily for 7 years and now often use windows powershell and ssh to my Linux box. At no point have I thought any of those things would improve my productivity.
It's all fluff - great to show off but no use in the real world... ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

What if you could get used to all that, then ssh to some Solaris zone or Lunix shell where it's not available then durrrrrrrrrrrrrrr how do grep again?
It neat, but it looks like it's showcasing things that you could do, not that you would do. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

All of the above is true. It looks like one of those early videos of Compiz, where it was all spinning cube desktops and tooltips disappearing in flames.
BUT, it still looks very cool.
The underlying question I guess isn't so much "why won't Windows do this?" but "Where has the sense of fun gone"?
It's fair enough that Windows is a commercial product and has to satisfy the shareholders and so on, but one of the things I really miss is that sense of wonder when you see something amazing happening right there on the screen.
You see some of it on the web these days, but it isn't as "oh wow" as seeing a dialogue box turn into a mushroom cloud when you hit "Ok". ____________________ The Old Apprentice |
