Hi Folks

I have been lurking for a while and had hoped my 1st post would be something nice / interesting.

I wasn't expecting my first post to be a venting spleen one!

Picked up a new CBF125 on Sept 12th and today had a few issues.....

Coming across a busy right turn off lights with a car right up my arse when all power just dropped away, caught me out and the car driver behind! Cleared the junction ok, pulled over..calmed down and back off again, a tad non responsive.

Pulled up at a roundabout, sat waiting and engine cuts out! Started....cut out again....Started....cuts out again. Pull in and wait for a bit. Started up and engine responded...no problems....pull left on to roundabout and bike just dies mid lane with yet again a car coming at me from the right!

There are a lot of bloody roundabouts between me and the dealers! Each one now posed a problem....limped to the dealers!

Dealer was superb, mechanic straight out, bike tested for 30-40 minutes solid and then the verdict....fuel pump failure! Evil or Very Mad
The bike is 2 days old with just 63 bloody miles on the clock. Mad

Not overly impressed with Honda at this moment in time! A search when finally home revealed this is a pretty common fault!
How the hell with a known issue can they justify compromising rider safety?

If the bike was older or the component older I can understand failure but 2 days and less 70 miles is just gob smackingly unbelievable!

As I say can't fault the dealer at all, hands on as soon as I walked in and a loan bike immediately offered (twist and go when your only used to gears is strange, very very strange Very Happy )

cheers and all the best
Marc

Well mechanical parts can fail, its the nature of the beast sadly. Generally bikes aren't as reliable as cars and tend to be more crude.

Hopefully its a 1 off and you will probably get many miles of trouble free motoring ahead.

Dealer sounded brilliant. Its a brand new machine and it shouldn't of happened, but these things do, not only with bikes but cars, TV's etc etc.

Honda are mostly fantastic machines, hopefully this is a one off for you.

Its a very common problem with the new CBF's

Lucky it's happened in warranty, and the dealer was nice to you Smile

Cheers for reply.

I hope it is just a one off too, although I am now recently aware some people are now on their 4th fuel pump!
Am also aware that Honda are leaving people in cold when warranty runs out even with a known issue prior to warranty ending they are making the customer pay for pumps when warranty expires (albeit that example is Honda Portugal)

Having just found out issue is ongoing with model since 2008 am beginning to doubt Honda's attitude to quality control and ability to solve problem other than replace part after part until the warranty expires.

Wife is totally and utterly happy with NC700 though Smile

The CBF is an Indian bike, designed for and sold into the Indian market and made for bowls-of-rice money. We pay real money for the same bike with bodged on afterthought fuel injection, a cat, and that dodgy fuel pump - which still hasn't received a VOSA recall.

Personally, based on what we've heard about it over and over and over again, I wouldn't take a dump on one.

Find a fuel pump from another model that doesn't shit itself.

This is getting to the stage of sheer negligence - it seems the issue is caused by some sort of corrosion inhibitor applied to the inside of the tank - the tank isn't flushed properly before they're filled up for the first time and whatever that stuff is clogs up the fuel pump, but for some reason, in most cases the problem only becomes apparent when the ambient temperature is hot and the engine has been running under load for a while. There are various rumours/accounts of dealerships being sent memos about this from Honda as well. This issue has been known about for the best part of 2 years now - seems to have manifested on some 2010 models and almost every 2011 model.

Edit: In my case I encountered this problem at around 1000 miles, and since the pump was replaced it has never reared its head again, even in the scorching weather we've had in the last few weeks. Perhaps that's because I do 300 miles a week so my tank was pretty well 'flushed' out by the amount of petrol that the bike was using.

Identical issue happened to my 2012 CBF125 too, after 600 miles. Most prominent in hot weather.

Took it to dealer, they instantly new what it was, fixed under warranty in 3 days, gave me a spare CBF125 they had while mine was being fixed. 3k miles later, no issues, brilliant service from Honda to be fair.

Once they fix it, I doubt you'll have any issues as the mechanic told me he's switched out about 20 fuel pumps on CBF's and none have returned faulty since the first one was removed.

Well no it isn't. Brilliant service would be a recall and fix, not wait till it dies when you could be 100 miles from home.

They know of the fault but don't want to publicly admit it.

This is a disaster waiting to happen - you could be anywhere and the engine will cut out/bunny hop like mad causing someone to plough into you, or crash whilst cornering or worse. Add to that the majority of the people who own these bikes are learners. Someone will end up dead or seriously injured because of this - perhaps it's already happened.

Thanks for replies folks Smile

Dealer has even said they'll try and have it back on road tomorrow at some point...assuming Honda send the part out that is.

On an unrelated area delaer did say on day of purchase that after this he has been advised he can't expect deliveries of CBF's until into 2013! Surprised Wonder if that's becuase they have to strip out the pumps of the bikes not yet in dealers for replacements for those that have been sold Laughing

I believe a revamped model of the CBF is on the horizon for next year.

It was only thanks to the driver behind me being switched on enough and having enough space to duck back in to the inside lane and pull round me on the lights that I didn't get rear ended!
Much the same as on the roundabout, except on that I'd have been side swiped.

I'm not pissed off due to just the part failure, I appreciate parts fail I think I'm more pissed because with 63 miles on the part it compromised my safety when Honda are MORE than aware it is an issue. Therefore known issue = Honda are knowingly putting riders at risk...ala power failures and stalls when in not good spots to be.

Knowing now what I know versus what I didn't then I was faced with a minimal choice in 125's. Whilst pissed off would I change my choice of bike? Not too sure to be honest given.....

Instantly ruled out was CBR / YZF - riding position on these was crap as I like sitting up not hugging the tank with my nuts and bracing my arms with body weight on them. Lovely design / look on these but for me exceptionally uncomfortable. Plus I'm not 17years old and have no desire to try to eek out an extra 1mph by trying to lay on the tank on a 125 Laughing

That then left the kawasaki's - who seem to think the only 125 people want is a on road off road style....again not a comfy riding position for me. So now Kawasaki is out.

Next up we're back to Yamaha YBR's....nice upright position but the bike just felt skinny and unstable...almost reminded me of the size of a 50cc MZ!

Sat on the CBF and was instantly comfortable - but still kept looking.

As I wasn't happy with the VanVan I had inherited it kind of ruled Suzuki clean out as well.

Next up were the chinese models....some of which I really liked the look of but was warned off by every bike owner I know and by a few local mechanics. Killer was lots of garages round here will not take chinese bikes in as part ex.

This issue aside and I appreciate I've only ridden the CBF for a short period but I like the handling and the riding position and I feel comfortable on it.

Whilst 125 market might be picking up there is limited choice of you don't want sports or off road...a choice of just two bikes (YBR I know has the custom version but essentially the same feel)

Hats off to my local dealership....part came in this morning and immediately fitted.

Today is gloriously sunny here and ideal for a bike ride.......however I have been reliably informed that the grass in the garden is aspiring to be a jungle wannabe and I must do that first! Shocked
