I'm looking for some heavy (250g) bar end weights suitable for stock ER6 handlebars. I understand these are the same weights that are used on the early 2000s ZX12R.

The Kawasaki part code for my ER6f is 13042-1006, but that's been discontinued. Part code 13042-5002 seems to be the new part, but at 29 GBP each, they're a bit expensive - a pair are more expensive than the handlebars themselves!

The stock handlebars have an M8 thread on them. Essentially any suitably shaped object with the appropriate weight that can take a long M8 screw should do the job. But this seems rather hard to find!

Any hints on where to look, or other solutions?

The ER6 is a very vibey bike, so it needs end weights pretty badly. Virtually all aftermarket end weights are designed for looks rather than weight, and if they have the weight, they're designed for the rubber bungs gripping the interior of aftermarket bars, rather than a thicker M8 screw. I'm looking for new parts, not second hand.

My wife has an 08 ER6-N. When we got it it was missing a bar end weight. Even then it didn't have a problem that made it too vibey to ride.

I got and fitted some off ebay, purely for looks and it has made sod all difference to the bike. That's in a good way, it's still fine to ride.

Are you sure you haven't got a problem somewhere else that is causing the vibration.

Both me and my girlfriend have one, so I can compare; and I have one set of OEM weights. It's only a real problem if spending 3 or more hours at speeds of 40 and under, with revs around 4k - not hard to do in London. Leaves the hands tingling for the rest of the evening. But I'd like to solve it.

How strange. I also have an ER6 and used it for couriering around London and didn't have this problem.

With respect, folks, I'm looking for bar ends, not people telling me my problem (vibration is less with heavy bar ends) doesn't exist.

With respect we are trying to point out to you that your perceived problem is not what you think it is.

The perceived problem is that I don't like so much vibration coming through the bars at 4k and 8k revs, and that this vibration is lessened when the bar ends - the same bar ends that the people who designed the bike put on there, for some reason - are in place.

If there's an alternative easy way to reduce the vibrations felt through the stock handlebars of a 2007 ER6 at 4k revs, please enlighten me! I've test ridden a few apart from my girlfriend's, and my bike vibrates less than most.

As to your own bike: it may be a different year, you may not be so sensitive to that frequency of vibrations (maybe the bones in your hand are a different size, who knows), maybe you have aftermarket bars, maybe you use a different choice of gears and speeds on the roads. There's lots of variables here.

It's a fact that adding bar ends changes the resonant frequency of the handlebars; different weights, different frequencies. The bike engine vibrates at a frequency that depends on its revs. If the frequencies converge, they are amplified. IMO this is pretty basic physics. All I want to do is change the resonant frequency of the handlebars because I find it unpleasant for my parameters.

Was actually on topic you just don't want to hear it. The perceived problem is nothing to do with the bar end weights it is either your riding style (quite likely) or something else mechanical to do with the bike but you have convinced yourself that it's the bar ends so no other answer will do.

As long as we're having off-topic discussion, why do you think Kawasaki put 250g bar ends on the ER6 then?

It was sound advice - investigate the problem causing the vibration, don't mask it with bar ends.

Could be the tyre, head bearings, wheel bearings etc, none are worth ignoring and pretty dangerous if they fail at speed.

I would agree if I had vibration that was abnormal for the bike. But it's not.

It's fine at any other revs than 4K and to a certain extent, 8K. Do a Google search; you'll see that it's very common for the bike's vibrations to spike at these revs.

It's only really a problem when cruising at 30 or 40mph. At 30, 4th gear is about 3K revs, but has very little pull when opening the throttle. Meanwhile, 2nd gear is about 5K revs, but the throttle is very sensitive and is liable to inadvertent acceleration or engine braking as you go over bumps in the road, potholes, etc. 3rd is about 4K - throttle sensitivity is just right, but the vibration is annoying to me on the handlebars after a few hours. When touring (i.e. unfamiliar towns) and going through 50kmh zones, I generally keep it in 4th at 3k revs. But not when I'm in London.

It's quite remarkable what's going on in this thread. I think people perceive what I wrote as an attack on the bike, and get all defensive. When I point out that this isn't relevant, people further crowd in to back up long-timers in ways that show they haven't read what I've already written.

All I'm really looking for is heavy bar ends that can neatly take an M8 bolt. But I can see that this is probably the wrong forum for this kind of functional question.

I should add that I have no problems at all with vibrations in the handlebars when the OEM bar ends are fitted. Problem is, we have 2 bikes, but only one set of bar ends.

I have some R&G bar ends on my bike. Haven't weighed them but they feel quite heavy. Might wanna get in touch with them and ask them about this .

As others have pointed out though, it may very well be you riding style, ie death-grip.

No, I don't hang on too tight or with straight arms either. I rarely have more than two fingers on the throttle in town riding in any case.

I'll look further into the R&G bar ends. I discounted them initially because they are advertised more as sliding protection; the stock bar ends are big lumps of steel, without a whole lot of room to add plastic for sliding without reducing weight or increasing length. Very few people seem to advertise weights up front, unfortunately.

Without actually weighing them I cant tell you much. But they are a lot heavier than the aluminium stuff you ll get off ebay and if you drop it on your foot it's gonna hurt like a mofo.

I've gone and ordered the R&G ones. We'll see how they work.

Thanks!

Oberion stainless steel bar ends. Worked good.

Oberon bar ends use are designed around expanding inside a hollow bar. I'd seen them before and discounted them for this reason.

Now this is a useful suggestion from a source I had given up on - from that search, I can see some candidates that would work. I had searched for 'er6f bar ends' and friends, and not had luck. But I should have also searched for other Kawasaki bikes that I believed used the same part. Thanks!

The fitting systems genius - I'm yet to have one drop out, come loose or give me any greif whatsoever. The OEM ones on the gs came out/loose all the time and they seemed to thread into a bolt with rubber moulded around it which would randomly disintegrate/slip. The shuttlecock looking inserts that expand out are fantastic if you do them up nice and tight so it bites into the bar! Thumbs Up

Unfortunately I'd need to cut the ends off the ER6 handlebars to make them work. They effectively have an M8 threaded nut welded in place.

Because it's cheaper to fit 1/2 a kilogram of steel billets to the handle bars than it is to sort out their 'concrete vibrator' parallel twin engines.
Smile

I got R&G bar end for a 09 ER6F. Shite. I had to put the OEM weights back on. My fillings were falling out.

So why exactly have you posted in the workshop section?

Those are used. I was looking for new items. If you read my original post, you'll see that.

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that I already searched ebay and gave up on what I found. You'll also find that I've gotten what I came for too!

You seemed to forget to say you had no bar ends at all on your bike.
Instead you made an incredibly complex post about heavy bar ends that made little to no sense. You'll notice I stopped posting yesterday, because I went on a 165 mile ride on an 08 ER6 without any vibration problems.
Just fit a set of original bar ends, thats all you need to do and the problem magically goes away.

Spackmuffin. Confused
