What a stupid thing to say.

BBC news tweet. Lack of first aid kills more than cancer.

So it wasn't being ran down by a car or a heart attack that killed any of these people, it was a lack of first aid training.

I can therefore declare I am one of those people responsible for the rising death rate due to having no first aid training.

Quote:
BBC Wiltshire ‏@BBCWiltshire
NEWS: People in #Swindon are being urged to learn first aid, as it's revealed more people die due to a lack of the skills than from cancer.

First aid should be taught in all schools from the age of 6yrs until you finish and then work should refresh every year. Well that's my view.
Having used my first aid skills over the years there are a few people around today that might not have been around if I hadn't have helped.
First aid isn't just about putting a triagular bandage on, it is, or can be, a way of looking at things in a different way, daft stuff like how you stack knives in the dishwasher, disposing of cracked glass. daft stuff like that as when you do first aid for long enough, I have done it from seven, then part of the D of E and went on a refresher only a few months ago so that is over 35 odd years I've been doing it for.
If everyone had done first aid then some of the deaths at the likes of Hillsborough could have been avoided even more, same with 7/7 and many more accidents. It is not just telling you what to do, but also what not to do.
Being trained will not fix everything, but it will damn well help.

I don't in any way disagree with getting training but to say that it kills more than cancer is stupid.

No training doesn't kill anyone, there are plenty of things to do that for you.

Maybe more lives could be saved but it's certainly not killing anyone.

FWIW I know a bit back certain health authorities/trusts advised nurses and I think doctors not to rush to give first aid assistance. This on the basis that if the person subsequently dies they could be sued.

However, there was also in place that if it was subsequently found a nurse was present and didn't offer assistance then they'd lose their professional certification so couldn't work.

So a real catch-22 situation and people wonder why the health service in this country is going down the toilet. That said, I'd still have what we've got over the one the Americans have.

On topic it's surprising how much first-aid changes. I did a refresher course after only 2 or 3 years to be told on a few things "Oh!, we don't do that anymore" or "that's not how it's done now" when the techniques have been ok for many, many years! Go figure.

Confused

It will be,

I went to see PMQ's last year some time and a law (or something) was passed saying that it will be on the curriculum for all junior school kids.

They may have come up with easier ways and school of thoughts, but if you have been taught the old way, it isn't wrong as such, well perhaps the spoon in the mouth and pin the tongue to the lip bit might be, but the rest is fine. The new ways just make it simpler or dumbed down what people need to know. It's like whether to use Saying alive or Nelly the elephant, both will work.

Both have the same rythm.

One thing that they did come up with last time I did a refresh was that tilting the head back to give a clear airway was now a no no. Just in case of a neck injury, but I would argue if the guy was blue, his neck would be that last of his worries.

Oh and you don't get to loosen tight clothing anymore. Crying or Very sad

They're on a sticky wicket there. As far as I'm aware, there's no statutory "good Samaritan" protection in English/Welsh or Scotch law. The Jockish Parliament recently declined to consider introducing any such legislation.

Case law supports it, but that's a shaky foundation for a professional.

Ironically (Alanis) I believe that you're safer trying your best without any training, than screwing up by misapplying what you've been trained to do.

I think everyone should be first aid trained. At least then you wont have people making your injuries worse because the dont know what to do.

I wouldn't trust some of the population to pour me a brandy after a shock let alone to give me heart massage.

Indeed, when the call for first aiders goes out in an office, it's often (IME) the oxygen thieves who volunteer for it. I don't really want people who have trouble operating a stapler to be given the confidence to start prodding at my trachea.

I've opted for first aid training at my workplace
A. To get out of reception for a day
B. An additional certificate for my folder
C. It enforces my CV, especially with door supervision and the NHS, they like to see people going for optional training, it shows you're interested in personal development.
D. Lettering lists like this is retarded, why have I done this

It doesn't actually say that lack of training kills anyone. It says more people die from it. Killing implies action, whereas letting someone die is passive. You're right that getting some training doesn't immediately stop people dying, but it might actually, one day, stop someone near to you (either physically or emotionally) from dying.

Besides, it is a classic use of language to get attention - using comparisons with something the reader can relate to, or understand, helps put it in perspective AND creates a nice sound bite.

Even if there were 30 first aid trained people around, most of them wouldn't do anything to help anyone if the situation called for it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

But +1 for not letting most people even try, fuck we had one girl break down crying just in evacuation chair training Brick Wall
