...But i didnt pass it neither!

The storey begins at just 6:30am when our hero awakens from his nightly slumber and makes his way to the kettle for a pit stop.
Then the hour of 6:45 arrives and he is out of the door and away on his galliant (iron) horse Wink to the land of the test centre. Where the evil wrath of the wind and examiner stop our hero from completing his quest for glory and 33hp.

Ok on a more serious note my test got cancelled because of wind today which got me thinking i ride in most weather (except snow/ice) and the wind wasnt THAT bad so why could my test not go ahead? isnt it down too us to deal with the weather conditions?
So I am a little cheesed off about this situation as i have to wait nearly a month for another test Sad.

But the flip side of the coin is it means that if i got a serious fault i could use the wind as an excuse in a court of law against the examiner who could have made a "unfair decision)".

Pah. Brave knights laugh in the face of wind!

Damn the examiner. Damn his eyes, damn his britches and damn his duckpond!

If i were the examiner i would havepulled you over explained that the wind was picking up and given you two choices:

Arrow Call the test off for the time being and retake it another time
Arrow Continue as normal, with you not allowed to use the wind as an excuse in the event of a fault Dangerous, serious or minor.

I can't really justify calling off a test part way through without consulting the other person. yes the conditions may be bad, and getting worse but i think ultimatly it is up to the person sitting the test to decide if the conditions are serious enough to effect the outcome of the test. learn some of the highway code, learn about the bike and safety equipment, bike maintenance, followed by doing figure of eights, u-turns, slow control, practising approaching junctions, correct use of egars(all off the road) before a minimum 2 hour ride on the road. Basically the bare essentials. hth

As for the original topic, man I'd be extremely peeved if my test was called off, especially for another month!! thats madness! Shocked Unlucky dude

They reckon that if a tree falls on you or you get blown into a ditch while you're on your test it's their fault for not judging the weather correctly for safety. I had exactly the same happen to me on one of my tests Sad

Exactly - they judge you not able to decide if it's safe, because you haven't passed your test and don't have the experience to know.

Holy crap! Shocked No wonder the waiting list is so damned long! We Americans don't even do a ride-out, or road test, or whatever you want to call it. Even still, it's about a month's wait to get a scheduled test, though they will take you without an appointment as an alternate if you sit there and wait patiently for an opening.

I'd prefer the system where people have to be trained and up to a set standard before being allowed on the roads, and only allowed on a small bike until they've shown their riding ability by passing a test, to the system in the US where you have to do a simple written test and you're then allowed to ride any bike as long as you've over 16 and don't ride at night. Thinking

That is not for the actual bike test. The CBT (with the 2 hours on the road) is just to validate your learner licence so that you can ride unaccompanied a bike of up to 125cc and 15hp on the road. It is not actually a test at all, just training. The actual test is about 40 minutes long, most of which is an observed ride but with some manoevres such as doing a U turn in the road (almost always an instant fail if you put your foot down while doing the U turn).

All the best

I'd be curious to see some riders/crashes statistics for both our countries.

Do people actually need statistics to show that letting a 16 year old out on the road on whatever bike they want after they've done a simple written test is more dangerous than letting a 16 year old out on a 50cc ped after they've done a days training? Thinking Thinking Thinking

Yes. That's what they're for.

It's not quite as simple as you'd like it to be. For example, I've been riding for three months now without incident (aside from a few close ones while sitting at lights and stop signs), despite the fact that I only 'did one simple written test'. That includes a few long motorway rides and a run or two up my favorite 40 mile section of country road every weekend. Confused

I'll let you know when I have my first crash, though. Just so you can say 'told ya so you twit'. Thumbs Up Twisted Evil

On the topic, dodsi. The examiner is RESPONSIBLE for the testee during the test. If he took you out and you were blown under a truck he would have some very interesting questions to answer, along the lines of why did he take a rider out while only sure he was a learner.

Hi

In 2003 there were 3592 rider killed on the road in the USA. That is about 5 times the number killed in the UK, in a country with 4 times the population.

There were 43220 people killed on the roads in the USA, compared to about 3500 in the UK, so 12 times as many.

However I don't have any statistics for the number of miles covered by motorcycle in the USA compared to the UK, let alone anything useful about where those miles were travelled.

All the best

Keith

According the the CIA, the US has roughly 4.861 times the population of Great Britain, as of July 2004.

US vs. UK

293,027,571 vs. 60,270,708

3592 vs. 718

Five times the crashes with 4.8 times the population. It appears the situation isn't quite as dire as one might think.

hmm, wind ha, i don't think thats a fair excuse for him to call it off. Oh well its probably for the best, the wind could've made you make a mistake, you can't blame the wind if you choose to go ahead with it anyway.

But it makes no reference to the number of miles in the kind of traffic between the 2 countries, which is rather critical.

Interesting that both figures have rocketed over the past few years.

All the best
