my current bike is a honda cbf 125

i intend on getting my first big bike in the next few months (start of next year i think) any suggestions ? i am really drawn to the kawasaki er-6 (naked) and the current model new is @ £5k interest free

i intend to finance the bike, i am only interested in NEW / less than 2 or 3 years old.

i need to have it 33bhp restricted, want a low-ish insurance group and a decent fuel economy, thankyou.

Go for it then. It would really make a refreshing change to see a newbie who has made his own decisions on choice of bike, rather than asking a forum full of complete strangers what they would choose... thus getting a whole host of different opinions... Wink Thumbs Up

Well, I can't necessarily guarantee that what I'm about to post is constructive, but it may be of some use.

Get test rides of bikes with different engines configurations. While I'm sure the ER-6 and its derivatives are fine bikes, I hate 180-degree I2 engines with a passion. Not sure why, I just really don't get along with them. I'm the same with 45-degree V-twins.

Conversely, a 360-degree twin is fine for me, though, and I'm sure that I'd probably like the Yam TRX engine, too.

Aside from this being a highly condensed rant about my engine preferences, the point is that you may find that you like the look of a bike, but don't like the feel of it, so get test rides on them. Doesn't have to be the specific model you're looking at, because a lot of manufacturers keep the engines pretty similar between model lines (in terms of basic configuration - there'll always be tweaks). Ergonomics are obviously model-dependent, though.

If you're going down the finance route, I would go for a 1-2 year old bike instead. Buying you new will see it depreciate quite a bit when you want to get a different bike.

Have you considered a Honda NC700S/X ??

Not too dissimilar to the Kwak but IIRC better fuel economy as it has lower BHP which you wont miss as much due to the restriction.[/img]

Are you getting £800 off the RRP, or is that a 2011 model?

Another vote for looking at the NC700 then, it ticks those boxes.

Went a while back to look at er6f, looked good, felt good etc: was only when I turned ignition on to discover that they have no fuel gauge only a low fuel warning light that put me off.

That's just me, may not bother any one else though Question

~5.5 secs to 60, pokey enough for a commuter. Easily as quick as an ER5 (and the low-down torque makes it better suited for cutting through heavy traffic)

Then I'd want them to do a lot better than that price. 0 miles, but it's been sitting there seizing up for 2 years. Also, be sure that it's unregistered. If they registered it 2 years ago, then it is a 2 year old used bike for all intents and purposes.

I wonder how long they're intending to refuse offers on bikes that are just sitting there depreciating? It might not be a question of the best offer that they can, so much as only offer that they'll get.

You'll be on 25kW anyway. If you're looking 2 years ahead, fair enough, but it'll depend what you're going to use it for.

Being restricted might make test rides problematical, but just bear in mind that's what you're paying dealers for. If they won't give you a test ride, why pay them a premium against a private sale nearly-new bike where it'll be a case of cash-in-hand and "You're insured, right?"

Given what sales are like just now, you'll be wanting to ask for a go on the salesman's missus to close the deal.

If you're happy with it then run with it, if 1600 isn't far off try & squeeze them to settle what's owed........You don't ask you don't get. Smile

They will calculate how much of the policy left and how much they owe you and they will deduct canceling fee from it.

I have canceled my 125 policy, after 4 month, paid 100 in full, got back 29 quid.

Have you checked if they would just change the bike on the policy?

You'll probably lose it as the policy ended before completion of the full year. Thumbs Down

Suzuki will do the restriction for you on the Gladius (SV650) at no cost and iirc you can get at least £500 off list.

MCN seemed to think it was a nicer bike than the Er6-n / XJ6.

Did my tests on an ER6-n - loved it. Not had the chance to sit on an XJ6 or Gladius.
