Just read this on the news and am glad the bloke got found whilst he was still alive

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-19635910

A motorcyclist has been found alive six feet down a ditch in South Yorkshire almost three days after crashing.

The 40-year-old man had been reported missing by his partner after he went out on his new motorbike last Tuesday, sparking a major police search.

Police said he was found seriously injured in the ditch near Thorne where he had been for three nights.

Just heard that on the radio.

Many years ago, I'd gone over to the TT, met up with a few guys from Scotland who were staying in the same B&B as me.
I had a brand new YPVS at the time, much swapping of bikes went on. The one I was most interested in riding was a MotoGuzzi 850 Le mans, it was an experience, to say the least!
We all got the ferry to Heysham, so they headed north while I headed south.
I got a phone call, a couple of weeks later, the guy with the Guzzi never made it home.
In circumstances unknown, he'd crashed somewhere between Tebay and Shap, on the M6, where the motorway splits in two. His body and bike weren't found for over a week.

Near Thorne? Shocked Lucky to still have wallet/watch/clothes/intact anus. I wonder if the bike was still there, it's not mentioned...

Seriously though, lucky bloke!

Spooky I've ridden that road although not recently.
Area is known for having deep drainage dykes.

From what I remember it's an ok road with some interesting bends that you haven't got to be too enthusiastic about. I find the bridges at the end are blind and you do get cars pushing it (FWIW map link).

Glad it sounds like he'll be ok. Bikes can be replace, people not so much.

"Insp Cocker said: "This was a large-scale missing person inquiry and required resources being pulled in from Scunthorpe and Hull and the use of the South Yorkshire helicopter for three days."

He added: "It is a credit to his determination that he is still alive."

Lucky to be alive!
Got told a similar story with a less happy ending locally.

https://goo.gl/maps/XwSt6 (Check this road out to the bottom of the hill)

Guy travelling on the Redruth to Newquay Road, came off at the top of the hill near the Whitehouse.
He disappeared down a ditch with his bike, got wedged /trapped in between tree's and died. Wasn't found for weeks ... why ?
The sad part is that he rode off after having a fight with his partner, when he didn't return his partner simply believed he had left her.

Sad

Hi

Many years ago I used to spend a fair bit of time around there. Flat, fairly straight roads but with some deep ditches and sharpish bends.

All the best

Keith

That is mental, I usually keep my phone in the top pocket of my jacket just in case I come off at night somewhere, but I dunno how intact it would be after sliding down the road and into a ditch.

I started doing it after I came off a couple of winters ago, nothing at all serious but I couldn't lift the bike off my leg as it went down at a funny angle. Was only a 125cc too so not very heavy. It made me think what I would do if it happened in the middle of nowhere.

(Probably cut my leg off with a penknife, then write a book about it all)

I'd rather stay in the ditch. It's cleaner, for a start.

Does this not show that a simple free tracking app like Google latitude on your phone may save your life?

Personally I'd be more concerned about, for example, breaking my arm and not being able to reach the phone.

Leather bike jackets are difficult to maneouvre in, I have trouble getting into some of my pockets at the best of times.

True, but I'd rather have a fighting chance at getting to it with the other hopefully non broken arm!

I wear a summer weight bike jacket with a belay (insulated climbing) jacket over the top, so moving about is pretty easy.

Almost as good as a Fleshlight cast like Rossis gob, with '46' emblazoned along the handle...

man he is one tough son of a bitch.
I mean, to stay alive, on your own, for 3 days, outside, with a broken spine (and its not exactly been cracking weather lately).

I don't think there's many people who could do that. much respect tbh
