M501 would mean its 400-499cc in a 4 stroke motor and the 01 designates that its first generation, ie ut cold well be from an 89.

from the website you listed
m = 400 -499cc
5 = 4 stroke twin
01 = first sequence

Quote:
Unlike type, the sequence number for engine uses a two-digit number starting with 01. Because of the late introduction of this code system, the engines used on several Suzuki models don't use this system. For example, the engine code of the GSX750S is the same as its frame type, GS75X.

Regarding R7** class, the GS750 is thought as the first version of the engine type, but it is not confirmed by Suzuki if they count it as 01.

checking the haynes first design frames with unrestricted power went from 89 to 99 - seeing as that a first design motor it should be unrestricted (power restriction is most likely done through carbs and CDI), there is little mechanical differenfct between the engines

my silver engine didnt have blanked off port from what i remember, where are these ports, and before tweaking give 42 hp at the wheel.

also dont forget that those number may give you the place and time of munfacture but it maybe out of a different year machine. it no usual for for poeple like suzuki to keep stuff laying around - that why the original bandit 600 came into exsistance, they where trying to use parts they had lying around

also chech this out

https://www.suzukicycles.org/GS-series/GS500E.shtml

it appears that colour of the engine is no way to tell the power, here tehy quote an early rad machine with a silver engine as having 52 (which i doubt they ever produced no matter year or colour), a slightly later on with a silver engine with 47hp, the chances of noticing that smaller difference is unlikely.

with that in mind the later engines would most likely have m502 number of or 03 etc. the 01 give the design version, if the first design than you have the 52hp variation.

have you actaully riden it yet. if so does it feel as tho it has less grunt
