All of the above points about the phone being dead after 10 seconds if its an iPhone aside, i use this;

https://www.followmee.com/Default.aspx

it means i cant bump uglys with old flames without being caught, but it also could mean i get found in a ditch while i'm still alive.

I do believe MANFLU also trumps child birth in terms of pain and suffering Wink Very Happy

Hope the guy turns out ok once they get on top of the hypothermia, breathing, broken bones, etc.

This is why I would never ever go out on my bike after an argument with the partner, nor would I let him, I'd kiss and make up just to potentially save his arse (shhh don't tell him though, or he'll win every argument by threatening to go out on his bike haha!).

What a tough cookie, I wonder how much longer he could have lasted? Must play havoc with your mental state Crying or Very sad

I guess even just having a whistle around your neck or something would be useful, just to signal you are there, esp. if your phone is broken or unreachable. Low tech Thumbs Up

I had my big get off after an arguement with my wife at the time. Didn't go out again after an arguement.

Inspired by this thread I now have phonelocator on my now ancient (but still not eligible for upgrade!) Symbian Nokia.

Should update automatically every 4 hours (may set it to less when out and about).

Just trying it to see if it kills the battery like most apps do. IMHO smartphones are not necessarily progress as require recharge every day. So hardly green technology. Something to be said for the old Nokia brick that I had to plug in every 10 days or so Very Happy ...and that was with the 'old' battery technology!

He was/is paralysed from the neck down - I doubt setting up a balloon would've been that easy!
But yeah, as long as your phone is switched on, they can see which cell tower you were last 'attached' to (or currently, if it's still on) and at least narrow down your location.

that's whats good about the locator apps though. They use GPS and so are accurate down to a few feet. Mines set to refresh every 10 mins and i haven't noticed a difference in battery i.e. its still shit!

Yeah I was chatting to the wife about this - I think I'd rather be killed in this situation too.

He might not be completely paralysed after all, saw the following on the dailyfail website:

Quote:

'He was conscious form most of the time. He could feel bugs on his face but could not move his hands to wipe them off.

He told me: 'I had my phone and my baccy in my pocket but could not reach either of them’.'

Finally, he managed to pull his phone out the pocket of his jeans. 'He turned it on but then he got loads of text messages coming in from friends asking ‘where are you?’ and the battery went dead,' Ms Margrave, 42, added.

So hopefully it's not a severed cord and he regains full mobility!

1stly, before this post..
Wow, what a guy, I'm certainly hoping the DailyFail weren't mistaken in their assertion that he had movement, and again lets hope a full recovery to that man!
And the way I pictured it, after initially thinking 200m is a bloody long distance Shocked (football pitch, My bike slid 82m at NSL(ish) speeds on it's side.. I didn't go anywhere near that far)
I think it's more likely that he stayed on the bike for some distance after hitting or 'clipping' the sign.. obviously out of control,
Possibly veering over the road or fishtailing/ tank slapping until him and bike either bit the dust and slid off the road or rode straight off.. which might be more likely given the extent of his injuries.

I don't have the most knowledge about the reliability of cell towers etc.. but when it comes to o2 I know people have tried to text or phone me whilst I have been out on the bike and the calls have not even wrung through.. the text's delayed by days..
So I'm not sure I trust that to save me, I mean is it even likely to be checked?

I don't want my phone tracking me at all times, call me paranoid but I want to be able to go about my life without having to worry about who's following me..
However this icedot idea looks great, Thanks barrkel!

I don't need to worry about my phone going bust;
I've never rode my bike without carrying my wallet, my phone and my keys, but over time I've decided that the best place to keep them is my inner jacket pockets..
Fiddly to get to in a fuel station shop but there's then no chance of them getting soaked and they have more layers to protect them from the road.. Also the phone is protected by a very high quality real leather case.
I dropped phones or landed on them hard enough times whilst having stunting accidents on BMX or MTB's to learn the best ways to keep them safe.. and as has already been mentioned it would take allot to disable a phone's ability to make calls..
Hell you have to be very unlucky to take out the screen badly enough that you couldn't navigate most menu's..
The worst risk with an older or simpler device is that you lose the battery, as for battery, charging daily and without heavy calls or app usage then the battery should be able to tick over for a good few days.

Also this;

...I will be including in an EDC kit, low tech is always best!
To be fair Vincent no it doesn't happen very often, and you might not be left able to deploy it.. but then as I discovered two weeks ago you never know what could happen when going out on that bike, so it's surely better to be prepared for any eventuality.

It does, but this sort of shit is why so many bikes are being stolen now.

This is where a tracker with a "biker down" sort of feature comes in handy. Mine texts and emails the registered numbers if the bike leans over too far and slows down suddenly.

I wonder what he was thinking the whole time... and the part about being able to feel insects on him would make me want to die if I were him.
