Friend of mine got a bike again recently and it quite quickly developed an electrical fault - it would drain the battery if left standing, overnight iirc.
Anyway, rather than take it to a 'normal' mechanic he did something which appeared quite sensible at the time and took it to a vehicle electrician.
Said electrician diagnosed the fault as a leak through the hazards or something. While he had it he also noticed the indicators were showing signs of overheating/melting (mini indicators). So it should have been an easy fix - sort out dodgy connections and fit new indicators, which he didn't even have to source. He attempted this but couldn't get the indicators to flash at a sensible speed.
The 'fix' turned out to be:
Bugger up the hazards completely, you now have to have the hazard switch on, the ignition on and the indicators (either left or right) on for the hazards to work - to me that mostly defeats the point of hazards and also means that if you accidentally hit the hazard switch (putting the choke on say) you don't notice as they don't flash until you put the indicator on and there is no warning lamp. So when you want to turn left (or right) you just get both directions.....
To get the indicators flashing right he soldered bits of wire to two bulbs and added them to the indicator circuits by stripping the wire and shoving it in the bullet connectors. These bulbs now just rattle around under the seat and flash with the indicators. Apparently he tried 3 different flasher units and 4 different wattages of bulbs - my arse he did.
It was left with the flasher unit loose under the seat too, as well as the binding tape going to the handlebar switches loose and not stuck to anything.
Still, it was a rush job and he did it on the cheap -- FOUR WEEKS & £150.
Hopefully it'll be coming to visit me again soon so I can fix it. I'll use new tape and everything. |

That's pretty awful. I agree with the sentiment of naming and shaming. To bollocks it up so badly and still charge that amount... I don't know how people can do it. ____________________ Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm. Previous: Firestorm (written off) - XJ600 Divvy - NSR125 - DT125 and a load of offroaders. |
