I am raising money for Chance of a lifetime charity in Northern Ireland, an Assisi Animal Sanctuary run programme.

The money is used to transport dogs to the mainland, mainly England & Scotland, which are destined to be put down as they haven't been rehomed within a certain time frame.

To date, 10,000 dogs have been saved by being transported to the mainland to find a new home.

You can read more about what the charity does HERE

I've just setup a JustGiving account so you can donate online if you feel you'd like to. https://www.justgiving.com/Jamie-Bailie

I am abseiling from the Europa Hotel in Belfast City Centre this Sunday afternoon, I will post pictures if I make it down in one piece.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Something smells fishy here. A team of Paddys wouldn't be trying to raise money to re-home dogs. Dags, maybe, but definitely not dogs Wink

Please, please, please, stop sending your "bull terrier type" dogs over here. We're fine for them, thanks. Hand

RSPCA nuke dogs after 3 months if they haven't been rehomed anyway over here. Seems like moving the problem from one place to another. Confused

Ok, I'll be the first to say it...
You're doing an abseil for charity?
Something a bit fun and very easy to do?
It's like people run, jog or walking 3 miles for charity. Actually, maybe a bit worse.

I haven't done much rope climbing and only indoor, but it always involves an abseil back down. It's just something you do - like walking to the shops or cycling to the gym Confused.

Go and do something properly ardours and not-fun if you want my support Smile.

I'd sponsor you to do a 1000 mile crawl over shards of broken glass. I'm with everyone else though, getting people to pay charity money for you to go do something awesome isn't what I want to spend my money on. I would much rather pay for myself to go abseiling.

Yes, there's also not specific clarity as to whether the money does 'pay' for the activity, which makes it even worse.
It seems it doesn't in this case for donations given through the link, but may not be the case.

Same place, same date but fund raising for something different. Do these things run with multiple charities going at different times ?

I am donating £50 myself, any money donated is used solely to transport dogs to the mainland.

Sorry if you find what i'm doing boring, I didn't think to myself "let's do something for charity, whats fun?"
A friends girlfriend does this sort of thing a lot and I thought it was a good cause so agreed to do it.

Did you chose the event before deciding on a charity??

The companies that run these sort of events (as per Ste's link) often take a very healthy proportion of that £130 minimum which is required to do the event.

I would always be looking very carefully in to it before asking other people to donate were it me.

By the looks of it their fee is £30 with a minimum raised for the fund of £100. Or are there darker forces at work here ?

No. She asked me if I fancied helping raise money for Chance of a lifetime charity to help save dogs lives. The abseil is a bonus.

This is the first thing i've ever done for charity, sorry i'm not as clued up as you all seem to be..

"Assii operates a No Kill Policy."

Yeah, because they ship them off and deny responsibility when some other place has to put them down. I'm all for supporting charities, but moving problems from one place to another makes no sense to me. Sorry, but I won't be supporting it.

I think there are a few charity events abseiling on Sunday, that link doesn't mention ASSISI or chance of a lifetime.

Is this a reading comprehension test? Laughing They move them to other animal sanctuaries on the mainland, and seeing as over here we keep getting told they're all struggling to find homes for animals, it seems like a bad idea.

It doesn't clarify that the £30 was a fee specifically, that I could see.
It's quite possible that a proportion of that minimum sponsorship does go to the company organising, though it may just be £30. Never know, could be even less - but I doubt it somehow!

I've seen in the past there's also charities shipping dogs in from the rest of Europe - spain etc.
It makes me think British people are seen as a bit of a soft touch - and also makes me question the "don't get a puppy, get a rescue dog" line when people say there's so many rescue dogs needing homes.

There aren't many dog pounds in Northern Ireland, the ones i've been to are always full, here's a quote from the link above:

"They would collect fit, healthy dogs from the pounds and transfer them by boat to animal sanctuaries in Scotland and England which were running at 40-50% of their capacity. There was and still is a greater demand for dogs across the water because of the obvious difference in population meaning the majority of these dogs are re-homed within three weeks."

I have no idea of the situation on the mainland but there seems to be a difference of opinion between the folk of BCF and the charity.
