Posted: 16:43 - 22 Sep 2012 Post subject: Running bike on prime? |
 |
|
Sorry if this gets a little long (i'll give the short version):
I've had a local mechanic give my bike a once over and get it through it's MOT. He's worked on it before and remembered it wasn't running perfectly, said he's "done the valves" for me whilst he's at it.
Anyway, it passes, no problems, but when I pick it up he says "right, I've sorted it out but it needs to run on prime now to give it a bit more air so it runs better now your carbs are all clean".
So I don't seem rude quizzing him; I ride it home on prime then switch it back to on when I got home. The bike won't run now unless it's in the prime position now. It cuts out after about 300 yards in the on position.
I've lifted the tank up and the vacuum hose is where it should be on the tap.
But I thought the rule was: Never leave it in prime, always leave it in the on position.
The bike seems to accelerate faster now too, so he's definitely done something good to it, but it's developed a "rasp" in the lower rev range <4.5k ish. (If this is helpful info).
Now I really want to like this guy, he comes across as really nice, and I hope you'll all say, "yeah the mechanic is right, it's a common fix", but I just can't see why it won't run in the on position?
Any advice would be great, should I take it back, thank him again because he's done his job better than he needed to, or look for problems myself? ____________________ Suzuki GSX600F Katana (1997) |

Vac hose goes from tap to one of the inlet manifolds - usually connects to one of the ports you'd use to balance the carbs with. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Either way, if you leave it on prime and the float sticks you'll wake up to the entire contents of your tank in the crankcase, the engine locked solid with fuel, and the petrol will fuck up things such as the rubber seals at the end of the crankshaft.
I have pictures to this effect. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Ahh, thanks for the picture, it helps a lot.
So I should be able to see it easy enough then with the tank off. I'm pretty sure that what your showing me here, is what I see when the air filter is out and I look through the housing. Are the four "nipples" accessible from the outside, I don't need to remove anything else do I.
Also, big thanks for all the help. ____________________ Suzuki GSX600F Katana (1997) |
