 |
|
Hi
When the mechanics forced some crap mirrors that didn't quite fit onto my bike/when I crashed and broke them, it seemed to have fucked the thread, now my new mirrors wont fit in the right side
Any tips/products for repairing the thread?
I don't have a drill though, was looking at thread repair kits but they all seem to need a drill

Simple, get a tap the correct size
slowly screw it in the damaged thread
Keeping the tap straight in the damaged hole.
Screw in very slowly, ( with some engine oil or 3in1 )
Once tap is in fully, un- screw.
Now fit new mirror, same for other side.
If that doesn't work get a helicoil get of eBay

The YBR has a reverse thread on the RHS mirror: you'll need a magic one. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Seems strange to have a left hand thread on a right hand mirror stem. Wind pressure would tend to want to un-screw the thread. On the left it would tighten the thread. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

lol I don't think i've tried "turning it the other way"
Didn't occur to me, I always follow the lefty loosey, righty tighty rule
Did eye it up and it looked damaged, will have another look later
I don't really get how taps work or helicoils!

Taps are a bit like a very sharp bolt designed to cut into metal and produce a threaded hole that's the right size and pitch for a standard bolt to fit into. They can be used to clean up a thread that's got the remains of a stripped bolt in it or to produce a new thread in a freshly drilled hole. Dies are the 'nut' equivalent of a tap and cut threads onto an appropriately sized piece of rod.
Helicoils are used when an internal thread has been damaged beyond repair (stripped out). They work by replacing the lost thread and have a thread on the outside as well as on the inside. To use them you drill the damaged thread out to a suitable larger diameter, tap it to the size and pitch of the outside thread of the helicoil, and then screw the helicoil into the newly tapped hole using a special tool. This leaves you with the internal thread of the helicoil which is the same size and pitch as the original, damaged thread.
Bit of a simplified view but you should get the idea. |
