 |
|
I was out green laning last week and had a low speed off on grass. The front wheel tucked under and I fell to the floor.
Nothing unusual about that! The sort of off you get straight back up and chuckle about afterwards.
But this time the bike smashed down onto my ankle and left me writhing on the floor in agony - It hurt like crazy.
It's now a week later and my ankle and foot is very swollen and there is a constant throbbing/burning pain. I can't stand up for long and walking up or down stairs isn't fun.

Is there anything I can do to speed the healing process? Any medical experts on here who can shed some light on potential healing time. I assume nothing is broken as I can move the foot as per normal and nothing seems unusual, just very bruised and swollen.
I was wearing No Fear MX boots - are these up to the job? Would a £300 pair of boots have protected me any better? ____________________ Motorcycle Touring Holidays in France: Ridelimousin

Mine looked like that after a serious RTA. Both my ankles were shattered to pieces

I've crushed both ankles under bikes, and had lots of swelling and unusual colours after (looking similar to your own), but no breaks.
IMO having a break is almost better. "Soft tissue injury", at this point, means to me "on and off pain when walking for the next 6+ months". ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

looks broken to me. i broke my ankle a few years back, and tried to grin and bear it by wearing ankle boots tied up real tight. managed 2 weeks working as a chef before my boss made me go to the hospital.
get it checked out. better to get it sorted out than to hinder the healing process for ages. ____________________ CBT - 17/09/12 * Theory - 23/10/12 * Mod1 - 05/03/13 * Mod2 - 25/03/13 * BOSH!

Well I went to the doctors first thing this morning and he recommended I get it X-rayed.
I had them done and there's no breaks
I have been prescribed anti inflammatory drugs, painkillers and they made me wear a compression bandage which hurts like hell!
They gave me the extra large bandage sock thingy as the swelling is so bad but it still barely goes on ____________________ Motorcycle Touring Holidays in France: Ridelimousin

I'm not surprised it's not broken, but that's owing to my own experience and that of my girlfriend - we have had three soft tissue injuries to the feet / ankles between us.
It may be worth noting that some medical opinion on compression is that it hasn't been shown to help for the ankle - see e.g. https://emergencynurse.rcnpublishing.co.uk/archive/article-compression-bandaging-for-soft-tissue-injury-of-the-ankle-a-literature-review - but of course I'm neither a doctor nor a nurse. We didn't go overboard with compression on any of our injuries.
Was also advised to put some weight on it and generally get it going as soon as reasonable (a couple of weeks) - not to the point that it's very painful, but not letting the whole area to atrophy either. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

I had an off on big rocks on the Sarn Helen route in Wales a couple of years back and my ankle took the full weight of the bike. I couldn't move and managed to squeak enough for the others to realise and lift the bike off me!!
It hurt like mad and I was dreading taking my boot off at the end of the day, as I knew it was going to swell up and risk the next day's riding if I couldn't get my boot back on!! There was an ice machine at the digs, so I filled plastic bags with ice and packed my ankle for the whole evening and next day was able to ride fine.
I'd clearly done some ligament damage though, as it was still swollen, bruised and sore, but I was able to take pressure and ride on it ok. Rested it up after that and it was about two months before it was back to normal. Ironically ligment damage can often take longer to heal than clean breaks. Hope it gets better soon!
I think the advice from a medical expert to ice it was what made the difference for me. It was pretty uncomfortable, but definitely limited the swelling and is something I would do in future as oppose to my normal approach which is ignore and pretend I'm fine!! ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'
