The end of my L plates is nigh! I hope!

I have my Mod 2 tomorrow!

I was just sat here working away all merrily when the sudden thought hit me, my stomach sank! I had actually managed to forget about it for an hour haha!

Sooooo, it's pissing down, but I've come into work on my bike today to make sure I'm getting all the practice I can, and after work tonight I'm going to take myself around the area the test centre is in as that's a part of st helens I don't know, and I want to familiarise myself with it.

I was just wondering, what are the most common reasons for people failing Mod 2?

Who else has there's this week?!

Most common failures are on bad observations and not cancelling indicators. Also, keep an eye on your speed, I know a lot of people who have had minors for 'use of speed' whether that'd be going slightly too fast for the situation / condition, or going too slow. Just relax and ride sensibly and you'll be fine.

Good luck! Thumbs Up

Cool thank you, I'm just hoping all speed limits are really obvious cos I would hate to fail for thinking I'm in a 30 when I'm actually in a 40! The shame!

If you find yourself in that situation then I would stick to 30mph but start looking down side roads for 30 signs...if you see 30.mph signs down them then your road should be a 40mph.

I mean, if the road has gone from a 30 to 40 (or the other way round) there will be a sign to indicate it, but if you've missed it somehow then just go at 30mph till you're sure. Id imagine you're better taking a minor mark for not getting up to speed rather than an outright fail for breaking the speed limit excessively.

That's a really good bit of advice, I hadn't thought of doing that Very Happy

Making assumptions about the area through over-familiarity? Wink

Relax. If you can ride safely, you'll pass.

The hardest part for me was ignoring the examiner riding up my tailpipe - I missed an unmarked junction because of it. Entirely my fault, but I found it much easier 2nd time round where the examiner pussied out and followed in a car (just because it was snowing Razz ) so try to keep your eyes (mostly) front.

Whatever you do, do not try and use the examiner as a clue as to what lane you should be in! I've seen someone suggest that, and can't think of anything more guaranteed to get a fail than a desperate last second swerve into what you think must be the "right" lane.

Ride your own ride: it doesn't matter where you go as long as you go there confidently and safely.

And enjoy it, it's a bike ride. Thumbs Up

+1 Thumbs Up

On my mod 2 i couldn't hear the examiner properly as there was so much interference with the radio comm so i just carried straight on at a couple of roundabouts and took some educated guesses all whilst signalling to him that i couldn't hear etc and passed with 1 minor Laughing As long as you abide by the highway code and ride safely/confidently then he can't mark you down/fail you for not going where he wants you to.

Haha, I'm actually quite good at that due to the instructor on my CBT finding an ingenious way to make me do it - half way through the road ride he said "Right, from now on, every time you forget to cancel your indicator, you owe me a fiver" .... not once did I forget again! Money threats work!

And thank you!

It may have been me that suggested that, but it was my examiner who told me to look out for him as an indication if you are not sure.

Examiners will not break the law to keep up with you so if they are miles behind you then you could well be riding too fast for the speed limit. If you are not sure what lane you should be in have a quick look at your examiners positioning.

forget the rain, if it is raining means you can take it a little easier.

i'll happily ride 5 under the limit in the rain if its medium. heavy rain i'll go slower till it feels safe.

aint no mountain high enough to keep me from going slow hehe. i know that makes no sense but i have sister act in my head for some reason.

CANCEL indicators TWICE , double tap/flick once completed manouver & if your indicators are the push in to cancel type, then keep repeating it every so often - tis far easier to forget you've left one on than you think & is an instafail! Mad

I would say the most common reason for failing mod 2 is....
THINKING ABOUT IT!
"Oh! Shit! I have that chap behind me with the clip-board for a personality! HAVE to impress him..... now what does he want to see?"
And doing everything completely DIFFERENT to how you would normally ride, either becouse you think he wasnts to see pin-perfect text book manouvers, or you dont want him to think your a speed crazed loon, or that you aren't really a nervouse nancy that never goes over 30... or WHATEVER....
And TRYING to 'put on a performance'.

Give the examiner a 'Performance Ride'.....

THEY WILL KNOW that's not how you ride, even if you dont necesserily do anything that wrong... BUT they will know you are acting, and be looking harder to try and see how you REALLY ride, and will be more critical, becouse you ARE NOT SHOWING THEM.

STOP THINKING - START RIDING!

as you have been told before!

Sigh, deep pbreath... "Here we go! He'll like it or lump it Doesn't matter. I'll JUST do what I always do. WORT that can happen is he gives me a tip to do something different.... thats all.... RIGHT BRAIN OFF - REFLEXES ON!"
