Quick question.

What insurance cover do you have?

My renewal is up, from doing some searches on compare sites I can either get:

Fully comp: £560 with £750 excess
TPFT: £200 with £500 excess(really? on TPFT??)

It's fair to say if I chuck the bike i'll do less than £750, or considerably more, there isn't really any inbetween.

What would you choose, and why?</Cilla>

TPFT currently as FC is about £900. TPFT is £162

Fully comp would only be used if I bought a new bike, one worth excessive amounts...

Fully comp on both my bikes. It was cheaper than TPFT and TP only.

TPO

Was cheaper than the other two.

Wanted fire and theft but the excess was compulsory £500 and another £500 on the quote, rendering it useless.

The question you have to ask first and foremost is can you afford to lose the value of the bike outright and replace it if something happens. Then after that, work out the benefit of comprehensive cover to you after taking into account increased premium, excess deduction, loss of no claims discount and subsequently increased premiums.

There's a balance between the two and it will be personal to your individual circumstances.

For that money I'd probably go Fully Comp. I was so glad I had it when I wrecked my Buell.

I have TPFT at the moment - Hope to get FC when I renew my insurance in November. The reason being TPFT was £600 with £200 excess, and FC was £1400 (can't remember the excess)... I thought that was stupid!

I'd never go TPO, not where I live anyway (Its not a bad area, but its surrounded by bad areas... sometimes the chav pikey scum seep out into the nicer areas and cause havok...)

Thumbs UpSmile

It's fair to say if I chuck the bike i'll do less than £750, or considerably more, there isn't really any inbetween.

You'll actually want to do more than £1110 worth of damage from throwing it down the road to "make" any money back on fully comp compared to TPF&T, considering that you're paying an extra £360 up front.

Then factor in how much extra you'll be bum raped for the next 5 years - OK, unless you're Paddy, who seems to have hit a sweet spot where they must reckon he's done all the crashing he's going to do. Rolling Eyes

So what are we talking, £1500 worth of damage before you break even? "Private average" price on a CBR600RR-5 is £2,770. I'm sure your bike is worth a lot more to you, but an insurer isn't going to agree when it comes to writing it off.

Tough choice. I avoid it by only riding bikes that I can walk away from while whistling a happy tune. Whistle

and I thought mine was cheap at £8.50 odd Sad I feel like ive been mugged now...

TPO for cheap bikes, the excess and years loading after an accident is hardly worth
making a claim. so TPO and ensure you don't crash and get a bloody big chain and
something that makes a noise.

My bike's worth less than £800 so I just went TPF&F for £100. I upped the excess to max because I knew I wouldn't claim so I've got Third Party Only really, in all but name.

Probably paid £8,000 in car premiums over the years, and not seen a penny back.

One small bump into the rear of a 3 series and you've spent that, then.
