Right. Basically I currently ride a CBF125 which I am changing to a GS500 soon. My insurance runs out on the 4th of October and hopefully the GS should arrive before then, but the person who I'm getting it off has had a car accident and now has whiplash and can't guarantee the bike will be here before then. I could always go down to London, book it into a garage to get it restricted and then ride it back to Scarborough. The problem is the parents, they won't let me ride it back as "motorways are dangerous" and it'll be my first time on it.
Personally I am confident and would do it. They also insist on a garage fitting the two little washers that restrict it. So now they want me to insure my 125 for a month at the cost of £120. For a month! What to do BCF?

Ignore your parents, buy some restrictors off ebay, fit them yourself and ride it back. Motorways are the safest roads you can go on and piss easy.

Either that or organise someone to ride the bike to scarborough for you but that won't be cheap.

Your parents are faggots.

Bikes are dangerous. They let you have one.

It's my aunt that I am buying it off, £100 Smile. I already have the restrictors, the garage would charge me half an hours labour and I get the mechanics stamp on the certificate, makes it a little more legit. I would ride it back but I still live with the parents and don't really want to piss them off.

WickedQuotes do me £414 for the CBF, 284 for the GS and £50 to change it over. I will probably get the policy on the CBF then change it over when I have the GS in my garage.

Won't let you? Laughing

If you're old enough to ride a motorbike you're too old to be being told what you can or cannot do IMO

Are you over 18?
Then you're an adult. Deal with it Cool Thumbs Up

Send the restrictors down.

I'll fit them and you come down and ride it home.

I'll even provide you with a certificate that holds the same power, legal wise.

I would go with motorways are the safest sort of road to be on.
I'm sure statistics prove it. I'm sure if you ask someone like Rogerborg he could dig out a link to the information.

However, life is full of compromises.
Have you thought about doing the journey via the A1?
You could go all the way up to the A64 but that does take you out a lot.
Turn off and go via Lincoln and the A15, over the Humber Bridge (free now to bikes) and then up across country to Scarborough.

The negative, or positive from your parents view, is that route has lots of speed cameras. Some I know some on the A1, A15, Beverley bypass and around Driffield are front facing (there may be others) but there are also plenty of rear facing type to catch you. So, you're not going to be stupid with all that are you?

It is doable and you will have more chance to get a break if required rather than being 'stuck' on the motorway until the next exit.

That said I also think the A1 isn't the safest of roads either.

Quick google maps overview click here.

HTH Thumbs Up

<edit>
Sorry, thought you were getting the restrictors fitted at a garage in London/aunts. Although do that, or via Paddy and his John Bull printing kit and my post stands.

Yeah and don't fit the restrictors either, just say you did.

Before you get on the motorway, make sure your mirrors are perfectly adjusted, its bloody hard to do when your steaming along and you'll need to use them a lot when changing lanes.

Then either sit at 70 in the outside lane like a good boy, or cruise in the fast lane at 85-100

What is he, the Google Man? Razz

No, he'd just say "It's a big boy bike, so MTFU" or at most "You're stealing the bike anyway, just get it delivered to a local garage to get the washers put in."

Why do the 'rents think that having a garage put the washers in is worthwhile? Don't they trust you? If not, you'll just take them out the moment you get a chance anyway. If they think it holds any legal weight, then they're badly mistaken.

Even those miserable bastards at BRAKE admit that motorways are by far the safest way to get from A to B by road - dammit I just Googled it for you - so their fears seem a little irrational. They're just wide dual carriageways with an extra hard shoulder for safety.

Heck, tuck in behind an artic, you'll still get there at 55mph or so, and way safer than doing the same speed on an A road with random road surface and junctions everywhere and mad cagers doing rage overtakes head to head with you.

One thing though, make absolutely sure that any insurance policy that you take out on the CBF will let you switch to the GS. A lot of the cheap underwriters only cover 125s. Don't trust what anyone else has been able to do, and don't believe any bullshit you're told by the broker, it changes from underwriter to underwriter and depends on what direction the wind is blowing.

Reasoned Rationa Argument can work well with the wrinklies.... I know I am one!

Goes like this:-

OK, Mum, Dad, lets compromise. I'll go down on the train, to get the bike, and I'll get a garage to do the restrictors for me.. receipt from registered mechanic business will at least show courts 'Due Dilligence' to taking 'reasonable' measures to ensure the bike is in accordance with licence entitlement... but motorways?

Now.... motorways statistically are the SAFEST roads in the country. There are almost NO road deaths on motorways, and the number of accidents per road mile traveled per vehicle are something like TEN TIMES better than cities or country roads. They even patrol them at regular intervals.

Its simply NOT true that they are 'too dangerous'....... when ALL the facts say that they are actually one of THE safest places to ride or drive!

Traffic is all going in the same direction; there's no pedestrians, or blind bends, no hidden side turnings; only nice long well sign posted entrance and exit ramps, and they tend to be a long way apart.

And I have PASSED my motorbike test, so a very highly trained and experienced motorcycle examiner has deemed me competant enough to ride a motor-bike, carry a passenger, and use motorways......

So, whats the problem?

I'll take my time, ride sensibly; and its a good way to get a 'feel' for the bike, and not have blind bends catch me out of SMIDSY car drivers test my reflexes while doing it.....

See.... I'm not as STUPID and crazy as you reckon........

Yeah, sorry that is actually horrible advice.

It's fair to say that that's how I use motorways, its up to the individual I suppose...

(Why am I even giving the OP pointless advice? He's going to be out there finding the new bikes top speed as soon as he sees those blue signs ...)
