Quick query,

I'm interested in an Aprilia but spoke to the chap and he states it only has the one key and fob for the bike.

Does anyone know where/how to get spares?

Any dangers to buying a bike with only one set of keys?

It's fairly cheap bike so if I crashed or it went for a walk I wouldn't make a claim insurance wise.

Cheers

Nick

Just be careful Nick DEERRRR Thumbs Up

As for the fob i presume it's got a alarm or something, rip that off then no need for the FOB, then get another key made by key cutter if you can or aprilia dealer will get it sorted for a dew bob Thumbs Up

New keys are no more than about £10 to buy and get cut.

New fob varies but they're easy enough to buy second hand and programme in. Certainly easier than taking the alarm off.

If everything else was genuine it wouldn't put me off.

My old NSR had only one key and fob, got another key cut and broke the tip off in the petrol cap first use, didn't bother me as I could still open it, so don't go anywhere that cuts them for a few quid as the quality will be shit...

The alarm on it was a Datatool, they sell the fobs for around £25 quid or less I think but I believe they can be a bitch to set up, I never bothered getting another though tbh...

For a while after I bought it I convinced myself the seller was going to come and steal it back with the other key and fob but I thought sod it, if it happens it happens, it'll just be the first place I go and look...

For keys just go to your local Timpsons - did 3 for my Fazer for a tenner - when I thought I would need to go to a dealer.

For the fob, I would carry one of those batteries for it around in your leathers / bike jacket in case it goes when your out and try not to lose it!

My ancient rxs was stolen several times Evil or Very Mad I replaced the ignition barrel after one of then. Cost tuppence ha'penny, was an easy fiddle (even i managed it) and came with two new keys.

But the bike was extremely low-tech, parts were always down the breakers and it didn't have all the whistles, bells and beepyness of a more modern bike so it may not be as cheap and easy with yours, but maybe worth checking.

At least then you know you've accounted for both keys if it has an alarm etc (mine didn't and the barrel was only replaced because it had been started with a screwdriver Evil or Very Mad )

Apparently some insurers ask for 2 keys when paying out on a theft claim.

However, you could just get a 2nd one cut before reporting it.

Timpsons managed to cut me 3 working keys from the snapped remains of an old one, so Thumbs Up for that.

If tis set up like yer typical car alarm/immob, then:

Metal bit of the key is pretty standard. Get a blank and have it cut up as normal.

The electronic bit will be rather pricey and maybe only available via the dealer. That, or eBay.

Then you have to put the two pieces put together, and have a dealer or other decent garage with an official alarm tweaking system enter the key codes into it. They can clear out the codes for any other "lost" (ahem) keys at the same time, then.

Some systems will allow you to bypass the immobiliser through some complicated prodecure that leaves you dancing around like a monkey doing the motions for a minute or two (basically tapping in the unique code number using the throttle and/or brake etc), so if you're game for that and don't want the cost of a new electronic fob and having the dealer code it in, that's an alternative. Just need to get the code, and have a regular fob put on the blank. You'll probably still want the dealer to clear out any ghost keycodes, though.

Yep, no problem. These are your instructions - https://rcms.co.uk/WebRoot/Namesco/Shops/950000402/4EA9/1D46/9852/66D5/5969/C0A8/190C/C186/system3_ci.pdf

The only problem I had was I didn't have a protective trigger switch - mine were two black wires with (I think) green tips.

if the alarm is the plug in to the original loom type you'll need the PIN code to program a new fob

if the alarm is the solder in all the wires yourself type then you use the security loop wires to program a new fob
