.... as the title says.

When I put my petrol tank back together I couldn't remember if the float was pointing to the back or the front of the tank, (and to be honest I can't remember which way round it is now), but would it cause the fuel gauge to work backwards if it was the wrong way round?

The reason I ask, (and I've checked all the wiring from the gauge to the tank here), today I put a couple of cans of petrol in (allegedly over 11 litres from 2 5 litre cans Confused ), anyway when I turned on the ignition lights the needle (which I thought was sitting at the bottom of the gauge), somehow managed to drop even lower.

I take it the mount hole is the middle. Depends on the lengh of the arm and if it hits anything. My A model is forward pointing but the mount hole is closer to the back so it wont go in the wrong way.

yeah around the middle of the tank and I think it's facing backwards as I may have thought forwards would have gave a false empty reading.... which now that I think of it... if the gauge said the tank was empty then it would still have about 3-5 litres left in the tank.

What bike is it?

And have you bent the arm with the float on it? Or is it stuck on anything?

Looking at the diagram in the 900 manual its forward. Cant say 100% as the dam thing is in German. Ask Jonny Ramrod on the Kwak forum as he has the 900.

GPz750, arm isn't bent as far as I'm aware (I have 2 and they are both the same shape), and when I've had the tank off I could hear it bumping up and down in there.

The question was if the float was facing the wrong way would it cause the needle to move lower?

Bit of a pain, but I can take the tank off tomorrow and turn it round.

Which does bring me to another question....

Does the sender unit need to be in contact with the petrol or tank to work? As I bought the other one from ebay which I've plugged in off the tank and moved the float and nothing happens to the gauge

Mine stopped working apart from full and empty, nothing in the middle. Open the outer cover and bend the wee tag in that slides up the wire winding. Also at the bottom with the cover off the winding has a stray end, this must be soldered to the base. Its connected to the wires that comes out the tank. Its very fine and easy to snap.

Quick update here, I got the sender unit out today and it was facing the right way, but put the other one in anyway and that was dead, so tried plugging the old one in while off the tank, moved the float and the needle moved the right way, so I'm going to mess around with them tonight and see why the other one isn't working
