Does anyone have one of the 6" Kindle's that are going for £69?

Interested in having a ebook reader as my iphone is too small to really get into a book, plus the battery life when running an app means i would be thinking more about how long the battery has left rather than the content.

I would use it to read in downtime at work and in bed.

I saw a few thread Joe posted a while back, just wondering if it's worth 70 quid.

Also can't see if they are backlit at all, can you read in the dark?

yea think that's the one i have. wifi only jobby. amazingly easy to read on anywhere. doesn't have a large amount of space but fits more books on than you can read at a time. battery lasts about a month or so i think. rarely charge mine as it's normally in my work bag.
you can download book packs from torrents full of major titles. or new releases are up pretty quick to download.
got mine for christmas and have had way more use than i expected.
also have an ipad and could use that as a kindle but the screen is totally different, kindle is far easier to read from. literally is like reading from paper. they aren't backlit either by the way, was decided against as it would ruin battery life.

tldr- yes worth it, get one if you like reading.

I have the 3G which is great because it has a basic web browser built in that's free to use all over the world.

But that aside, I love my Kindle - I use it every day. It's not backlit but that means you can read it in direct sunlight.

I took mine to Morocco on a tour and it was great for the ferry and the evenings after riding. Plus, depending on your morals, books can be torrented.

You need a light source for a Kindle. They aren't backlit, but you can read them in direct sunlight.
I have had mine 2 years and I still love it.

Mines the Kindle Keyboard with wifi.
I have heard rumours of a 50mb data limit with the 3G's now, due to them being used as a 3g hotspot (something like that anyway).

I find the web browser pretty pants, but ok if you are desperate.

Thanks for the quick replies, im quite tempted to buy one.

I rarely see sunlight so being able to read in direct light is a meh from me, Nor is the 3g option a major pull, got my iphone for that.

That said met some travelers in Mongolia who had the same kindle as you Joe with the free global wifi, and aparently could send and receive email in the middle of nowhere, which is quite impressive.

I already have a bunch of books on my kindle cloud account (have been using the kindle iphone app), but it's just too small to get into on the phone.

I was reading a few reviews about there being an ad-supported version and a non-ad version, is that in relation to older models?

Also i presume i could connect the kindle to my iphone with tethering?

I assume you haven't tried that!

The web browser only works in the UK on 3G. You can browse the app store abroad on the 3G, but that's it.

Well that's odd seeing how I've used it in Europe and Africa to browse the web.

Oh.

When I tried it it didn't work. Was a couple of years ago now though.

Also, this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle/TxGPT17594YQYV

But if you say it works, I believe you! I'll try mine next time I'm abroad.

I've used mine all over Europe, Greece, and Cyprus within the last year. 3G works just fine. I use it for BCF, facebook and Email. It is not easy to use the keyboard but great in an emergency. BTW It works fine with google maps if you ever get stuck.

I reckon that I have 200+ books on there at the moment, more than enough space left over.
This is a useful link if you intend to use the browser.

I cannot see the ads mentioned on the UK site, but looking at .com the kindle with ads is $69 and the non-ad version is $89, so the £69 would roughly be the equivalent of the $89 I think. (no ads)

3G used to be worldwide, but I believe they've taken it off the newer versions. I have one of the first ones that came out in the UK - now the 'keyboard' and the oh has the model later (without the keyboard).

Ergonomics wise the keyboard is better imo, not just for being able to navigate the store better, but the forward/back keys are better located and feel more 'right' - although thats maybe just what I'm used to.

Definately worthwhile - I do far more reading than I used to (I used to read a lot at school & uni but got out of the habit). Its also much easier to read on trains etc (I'm currently working my way through Wheel of time on the train, which is what 4' of book?)

Tl;dr; buy one, but probably the keyboard and not 3g one.

You may have got a kindle keyboard rather than the original 3G with a keyboard. They're the same hardware, but they took away the free 3G on the browser, presumably because it was so popular. I have one of the early ones and have used it on 3 continents in more countries than I can name. It helped no end being able to use google maps when I was lost in the hills outside Pune (India). It's not a good browsing experience but is one hell of a bonus if you really have nothing else.

If you travel a bit and can find one I'd really recommend finding one. I'm not sure you can transfer accounts and still keep the free worldwide free 3G so check that before taking my advice.

As far as I know, the Kindle fire is the one with the adverts. The thing that is a colour tablet as well as a reader. The standard readers don't come with adverts.

I got one for the wife, and she read more in her first couple of months with her kindle than she had in the 5 years we'd been together - she is now able to find a comfy position in bed and read rather than have to move every time she turns a page.

She got one for me, and I also rate it highly. I was absolutely gutted when the screen went (it had taken a couple of knocks), because it happened when I was at a really good bit in the book I was reading. Amazon sent out a replacement which arrived the next day - all I had to do was return the broken one. Quality customer service.

I have a kobo, basically a rival kindle. I got the most basic one at the time but it does the job just as well. Currently have 100's of books stored on it with plenty of space left

Also you can use a bit of software called Caliber to transfer books onto it to get round annoying drm crap

i only went for the kobo as it was cheaper than the kindle when i bought it, and was no difference in usability. didn't see the point in a touch screen reader as less things to go wrong and didn't want my greasy finger prints on the screen

kobo down in price...https://www.whsmith.co.uk/KoboeReaders.aspx

BUT... as good a it is, it's not a kindle... Crying or Very sad

With all the attendant amazon guff, it is a breeze to use (wife not too tech savvy Rolling Eyes ) to buy books, has the cloud storage etc...

i know its good, cos she never bothers me with the usual..."Hon, can you fix my ... Evil or Very Mad "

Kindle gets Karma from me... Thumbs Up

Tech savvy and willing to do some homework..
Anything but a kindle..(no drm, loads of free stuff out there.. Wink)

Want the straight of the box E-Reader experience..Kindle all the way Cool...
Thousands of new books, a dedicated store, cheap offers on the latest-ish books

I got the Kobo version and to be honest I think its better than the kindle for several reasons:

Cheaper. Even the touch screen version I have came in cheaper than the Kindle Wifi.

Strage: It has a 2gb onboard storage which holds about 3.5K books and you can expand that with a ssd card.

Formats: The Kobo can read pretty much every format out there, epub, ms works, PDF, Mobi etc. The Kindle is restricted to work only with kindle format (Mobi).

At first it was weird not having a book to hold but you do soon get used to that and as said above, you dont have to move when you turn the page. You can bugger off on holiday with one item now rather than half a dozen books.

It has a basic browser on it for the likes of Facebook and google, black and white browsing and pretty slow but browsing online all the same.

Had an issue with battery life, if you leave wifi on then it drains the battery pretty fast, turn it off and only use wifi when you want to connect and... well I charged mine up about 3 weeks ago and it hasnt needed charged since and theres still a good bit of charge on it.

Only down side is if you let the battery die then you might as well be holding a brick for all the reading you can do. Thats where having a book would be handier than the ebook. Cant read anything if the batterys dead.

Thats brand slavery talking there.

Erm you can get more formats and more books on Kobo. AFAIK Kindle has around 650,000 books available currently while on Kobo, with its multi format reader you have around 2 million. AND Kobo has a dedicated store just like the kindle.

don't get the comment about it not being a kindle...

the kindle has zero advantages over the kobo apart from name...

the kobo is much more compatible and has better storage. The display looks identicle in quality

I will getting the gf an e-reader for Christmas, Kobo Glo seems great for the job and is appealing because of the lighting. Only thing I was wondering about is the lack of hardware buttons to turn pages.

From the look of it, its a lot like my kobo but with added lights. The page turning is simple. Just touch one side of the "page" to turn. Depending on what side you touch you go forward or backward through the book.
