an age to live to... what would it be?

we are forcefed government BS about 5 a day/protect the environment, don't do this, don't do that, don't do anything as it's unhealthy for you and the environment blah blah blah....

in your current lifestyle (accidents excluded), do you have a life expectancy in mind?

Me, I'm 39, one of my cousins passed away at 25, an uncle passed away at 39, an aunt passed away at 43, an aunt passed away at 44, all my grand parents passed away in their early to mid 60's... but I'm told by the government to keep working till my mid (and by then) late 60's to provide for the future...

Sorry, but I smoke.... I drink... I've accepted I passed my mid life crisis in my late 20's.... anything over 45 is a bonus to me and my family history (and to be honest I don't want to make it to my mid forties)... but it just got me thinking....

Does anyone else have a life expectancy age or an age they would like to get to (accidents excluded)....

and if this thread is in bad taste then I will request it removed

I didn't add an age for myself... unfortunately my dad is 62 and never been to the doctors in the last 25 years I know of... my mum is 59, and both are chain smokers and they are still going strong..

me... personally... if I had to choose an age... it would be 50.... and not a day older.

Why... that's a whole new thread entirely

I think the worst part of getting old would be slowly losing loved ones. I wouldn't mind it so long as I'm able to wander around and not too frail. But I couldn't imagine the confusion of losing your partner, someone you'd lived with most of your life. Or losing your mind, that would be even worse.

Statistically speaking I should be able to make it till 80.
I don't drink, don't smoke but am overweight (even for my height)
If I started to exercise, I could get myself extra year or two Thinking

But I digress, 80 sounds good as I think I should be able to do all the cool shit I want before going out in a fiery glory or two tons of tnt, petrol and fireworks on an expensive yacht (using loaned money just to say fuck you to banks Cool ) on a coast of Sydney (or other highly populated coastal town).

At the moment I don't see the appeal of dragging it out.

Reading this has made me realize one thing. We're going to suck as old people. I mean seriously, we've all had and known our grand parents and we've heard their stories about when they were younger. What stories are we going to have for our grand kids?

My grandparents, Grandad was a metalworker in the sirocco works in Belfast which was a huge manufacturing plant. They pioneered the development of Air Conditioning. He done a lot of work with iron and steel. Some of the stories grandad told me are just fascinating. He was one of the few people throughout the troubles of NI and Belfast that had a free run of the city without fear of "wrong religion, wrong place" attitudes.

A very respected man on both sides of the community because he was one of the best mechanics in the city. In a time when cars were not everywhere like they are now he could tell what was wrong with a car just by the sound it made, if it wouldnt start he'd be able to start it and then tell you what was wrong. Theres the odd photo of him with an A Frame rigged up and him hauling an engine out of a motor with pulleys and chains. When he died the Lord Mayor of Belfast attended his funeral, along with the top men from the paramilatary organizations even though he spoke out many times about his dislike for the troubles. Purely because of his mechanical knowhow he was well respected enough for people to pay respects.

My Grandmother died when I was too young to remember but during the war years she was a motorcycle courrier until she was drafted into the catering corps. The story goes that one day the cook went AWOL and she offered to help out in the mess. After cooking an Ulster fry with all the trimmings (soda bread, potato bread etc) from scratch she was transferred to the catering corps full time on a - whether you like it or not order.

What stories are we going to be leaving our grandkids? long gone are the days when a community was a close knit thing and everyone clubbed together in times of hardship. We're spoon fed the basic living requirements to the point where some people are better off sitting on their arses with their dole money.

I can just see it now:

Grandad what was it like when you were young? Oh well, we sat around in our trakkies smoking our pot and never wqrked while the government paid for our rent and gave us money for food.

To be honest, its kind of sad.

Agree 100%.

The thing to do then is to spend the time you have alive, living.

Don't miss out on an experience, taste or sensation. Throw yourself out of your comfort zone, be alive.

I just turned forty this year, I've done all sorts of stuff. I've lived for six months in a tent on the side of a river in Victoria, surviving off what I could catch, I've trekked up and down the east coast of Australia, I've crossed the planet twice in order to get married.

I'm now riding a motorbike, which I had previously dismissed as being dangerous and foolhardy - wish I had started riding 20 years ago.

More importantly though, I'm seeing potential in the bike - epic tours of Europe are on the cards and when it comes to moving back to Australia, what an awesome trip it would be to do most of it on a bike?

Stories and experiences come when your comfort zone is far behind you. Talk to the older folk and they will tell you their favourite times were the war years. Not because war is good, but because they were terrified and thats when you feel most alive.

Live!

And every day without fail one should consider himself as dead.

Not sure how'd that work with the whole you still age thing, but meh.

Immortality, not invincibility.

Probably Melbourne initially, thats where my parents are.

Ultimately, Canberra. It's where I grew up. It's home.

Nothing like a brush with you're own mortality to make you appreciate life. Was given all clear from the big C a few months ago. Am fifty. Don't feel it. It's just a number. I like the fact that band members of The Who who smashed up guitars and amps singing 'I hope I die before I get old' now wear woolly jumpers, run trout farms and seem very happy.

I don't want to live forever. I don't want to die alone. Am busy making memories. Smile

Imortallity would be cool for about a couple of thousand years but then life would be a bit same ole same ole.

That's why The Gods start wars (I think).

Spice of life war is.

I dont agree about immortality. Imagine having to watch your friends grow old and die around you time and time again. I think it would be rather depressing.

I'm 55 and I'm already seeing people I grew up with passing on with illnesses associated with age rather than accidents.

My missus winges about my life style, bikes, beer, unsavoury foreign countries and even more unsavoury people. She still thinks I ought to grow up!

So what, when I go and I'm up there (or down below) I don't want to have said 'I didn't try that'.
