After Kickstart's comment in this thread on sintered and non-sintered MOT failure depth my lad wondered how you tell the difference between the two types...
...and I had to admit I didn't know either
So quick question, how do you tell what's fitted to a bike, bearing in mind front and back may be different?

Between organic and sintered? This obviously isn't 100% guaranteed but in general organic are darker and of a more uniform colour and sintered are lighter with 'bits' in them. How they look once they have been in use and discoloured with heat though is competely different.

Thanks for the replies so far but none have really answered the query.
If you get a bike, say 2nd hand, and look at changing the brake pads how do you know what type has been fitted.
Come to that what magic pixie tells the MOT tester that it's a non-sintered pad so they can give you a fail if less than 1.5mm left Likewise how do they tell sintered is greater then 1mm but maybe less than 1.5mm (must have great training/eyesight as I've never seen them measure it). Or do they just assume all are non sintered and fail at less than 1.5mm for safety reasons?

If the pads are that low that the MoT tester has decided that they may be fail worthy it would be best to replace them with some HH friction rated pads on the front and some GG rated pads on the rear.
I have some Armstrong pads fitted to my XR-SM.They have a green painted backing plate but they do have small particles impregnated into the pad material but are GG rated.But they do act more like HH friction rated pads and give a 'swishing ' sound when the brakes are applied.I put this down to the heavily drilled swept area than the pads themselves ____________________ Just talk bikes.What else is there?
