How long do I have to be 'formerly known as' for?

I have decided to get down with the kids and change my name from 'Midlife Crisis Woman' to 'MCW'.

This appears to have lost me karma and given me a 'formerly known as..' moniker. How long does this stay over my avatar? Why did I lose karma? What's wrong with just being MCW?

Now I know how 'Squiggle' felt when he changed his name from 'Prince'...

Up until about a year ago you couldn't change your name at all, so be glad you can now.

Don't worry about Karma, as long as you aren't a complete dick (is that even appropriate terminology for a woman? ) it'll improve.
