Motored up to Farnborough for the umpteenth time for my third Mod 2 Twisted Evil Different instructor than the previous two times, this was the one I had for my first Mod 1.

On Sunday I did 3 hours on-road training with a nearby training school , went out for half an hour, and the instructor basically said I was awful as I wasn't doing enough lifesavers Confused which I did every time I turned right, changed lanes, or came off a roundabout.

His instruction was every time you indicate you do a lifesaver in that direction, lifesaver before you turn, and another lifesaver every time you cancel a signal. I didn't agree with half of this, as I understood it the only time you'd do a left lifesaver is when changing lanes or if there are a lot of cyclists about, but I didn't care as long as it was gonna get me my license. Three hours later I was apparently perfect and he wished me good luck for the test Smile

Went out on the road on the test, speed good, stops and moving off good, didn't want to get my hopes up but deep down felt like this could be my day. When we parked up afterwards, the examiner whipped his pad out of his bike, and started marking it for quite a while, which worried me no-end.

Got into the office and he told me I'd failed, one steering fault coming off a roundabout which could have resulted in an off. Fair point tbh, he asked why as well as those 4 point checks i was constantly doing lifesavers, I explained my instruction.

He asked which training school and instructor, I told him and apparently he used to teach for the same one, and that what I'd been told wasn't right at all, and that he'd get the 'assessors' onto him.

What really fucks me off is I've failed twice for speed and road positioning, now I've failed for something completely different, if I'd have not done as many lifesavers and looked where I was going I wouldn't have L plates anymore Sad

When I'd drained half a deck of Marlboro Red's, and whiped the tears away, I considered whether I should complain to the training school? After all I paid £75 for 3 hours instruction which did fuck all except give me something else to worry about and fail on, after that I wondered whether complaining to the DSA might stop other people from suffering the same fate.

What is a 17 year old to do? Sad

Coming off the roundabout here, did my lifesaver and strayed into the chevrons as I wasn't looking where I was going, examiner said if it had been a kerb I'd have been off, fair point really Sad

Coming off a roundabout you do a quick check to the right before you make the maneouvre - this is to make sure ome ass hole isn't cutting you off.

So you went into the chevrons in the direction of the van Elles Road (A327)? That's an unbroken line. You shouldn't cross it at all.

Where were you when you changed lanes. I would venture that you should have been in that left lane well before the turning, perhaps at the sign for RVP Aerodrome. Life saver should be enough time to spot something but not put you in danger by lingering with it. I'd have done that at the painted A327 marking.

Obviously it depends how busy it was and when the instruction was given, but that's where I'd aim to have done the change - well away from the chevrons.

Lifesavers are done before change of direction or speed. Do too many at you're at risk of not looking where you are going.

Don't know if you drive a car, but when I was learning they taught "Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre" - on a bike it's the same except there's a lifesaver after the signal. You certainly don't need to do it when cancelling a signal. You can make a complaint but I'd find a different training school. Do you have any biker friends? Can you get them to follow you out one day and comment on your riding?

Just MHO, I'm not an expert.

You're 17 - years ahead of you - I've only just started this at 44 - You're lucky to have discovered it so young. Keep at it.

[email protected] but if DSA Derek is already on to them there's not much that you can do except confirm that you've had a problem.

Complain to the training school? Well, go ahead, they've already got your money. You could try and get it back, but it's your word against his, and which of you is sporting a shiny ADI badge? I mean, assuming that he has one - feel free to ask next time.

Why the chuff are you wasting a test's worth of money on training though? You're not going to pass during a lesson, but you can (demonstrably) learn during a test.

Just analyse your own riding honestly and get it rebooked.

just remember, you can only appeal against the dsa/test center in a court of law. and this will not change the result of your test.

The way I see it is:

The instruction you were given was wrong. You do a lifesaver when you change position on the road and when your moving off from a stand still.

But you got a serious anyway which made you fail regardless of the fact you were looking around you like a lost puppy. Take the lifesavers out of the equation and you still failed.

Without sounding harsh I would just man up and accept it rather than trying to place blame or complaining to the DSA. From what you've said the examiner was going to sort it out with the assessors and in any case they get assessed once a year if I recall and if they are teaching wrong it will get sorted then.

Either way you still wont get rid of the L plates until you spend another test fee and sit another test.

It's your right to complain anytime you have received a service you do not think was was up to standard , Sub-Par , Aggrieved , Whatever you want to call it .

Some People say we complain to much in this Country , Some people say we don't complain enough , Some People would just shrug it off and forget about it and some People would complain to try and get the problem at least on record and looked into even to just make themselves feel better about being taken/treated unfairly and doing something about it .

There is no right or wrong answer , If no one complained about anything the Country would be a mess , If Everyone complained about everything the Country would be a mess .

Good luck on your next try anyhow Smile

In fairness you did fail on a serious regardless of what your instructor told you.

I would make a lifesaver there in case some jerk stopped texting and found him/herself in the wrong lane and cuts-in; however, look to your right for more than the slightest glance and that is where the bike will go.

You could try complaining to the school and see if they will give you a supporting ride prior to the test as a goodwill gesture on the basis of the examiner's comments (next time take the instructor in the debrief with you perhaps?).

Theres no point in dwelling on it.. The instructor will be dealt with at some point (hopefully by your examiner straight away), and it won't help you to pursue it.

Other than a simple mistake, it sounds like you're ready. Get it booked and beat the new regs... Good luck Thumbs Up

It sounds like you failed the tests for good reasons. The examiners are not out to fail you, if you ride well you will pass. It may be the fault of your trainer for not preparing you properly.

I spent hours watching clips on youtube to try and learn everything I could. You have passed mod 1 so the hard bit is done. Try and get out with someone else who has a bike and can watch you when you are more relaxed.
