 |
|
For my CBT the guy told me the new rules wouldn't really affect me because I'm 24.
I just thought I'd check here....
I'm 24, I intend to do my test on my own bike, a suzuki GN125, which has 'A2' next to it in this list here:
https://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_197021.pdf
Does that have any relevance with the new rulings?
Basically, if I do my tests on my 'A2'(???) GN125, and I do the tests after the change in the rulings, as a 24 year old, what happens?
Of course I'll be trying to get it out of the way before new year, but I'm just curious anyway. Mainly about the 24 years old thing that my CBT instructor mentioned. |

The new rules DO effect you.
Its a bit of presumption on his part that they dont.
Most over 21s these days do a DAS course to get a licence. From Jan the DAS age goes up to 24, so over 24's testing under DAS wont be effected. every-one else will be.
New rules apply to every one, regardless of age, IF they dont want or aren't eligible to test under DAS rules.
Which means, after January, self training & DIYing the tests on your own 125 will only get you an A1 125 'only' licence irrespective of how old you are. Could be 17 or 70... new rules apply to all. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Interesting, cheers for that
May as well be lazy and ask what the 125 'only' licence is all about?
Clearly it's self-explanatory, but then, for example, what do I need to do to ride something bigger? Sit the tests again, do it with an instructor, etc?
Maybe I'll just fork out and do a DAS course...... |

Same as it is now: it lets you ride a 125 up to 25kW, but without the learner restrictions i.e. L plates, no motorway use, no pillions.
You can get one today, but only if your 125 doesn't claim to do 100kph+, so it's considered a bit of a joke category.

Sit the (practical) tests on a bigger bike. 395cc+ and 25-35kW gets you an A2 licence, 595cc+ and 40kw+ gets you an A3 (aka A).
There's no requirement to have had any instruction. Getting a suitably insured test bike to the test centre legally is left as an exercise for the reader.
The tests aren't hard, and you've got time to get them done on your own 125 now. If you do, you'll get the current 25kW license, and can practice on a bigger restricted or "restricted" bike then rock up to the test centre on that and convince them that it's making 40kW+ in order to get yourself an A3/A license later at your convenience.
Ironically, the DSA are getting snotty about showing evidence that bikes have been restricted down to 35kW for the A2 category, so they've got no grounds for moaning that a test bike might not be making its claimed full power. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
