When reading the thread about small number plates I went to the websites mentioned out of interest.

You can order a road legal plate from MALPLATE without a problem but if you buy one from a shop you
have to produce your drivers liecence and other bollocks.

So why bother buying from a shop if you have to prove you own the bike when you don't online.

Can someone with a brain explain this???

It's something to do with the shops being scrutinised more thoroughly.

The websites you see advertise them as "show" plates (i.e. not advertised for road use) not that it makes much difference.

From 1st Jan 2003 you are required to verify ownership and identity by sending originals (not copies) of your log book and some form of ID such as a passport or utility bill. Any order received will be held until we have received the relevant documentation.

You do have to show them ID and the V5 if you're ordering a road legal one, you can without doing that just order a legal sized one in Arial font which is a good as road legal but without the hassle.
