Varadero XL125V getting it going again...

Just been arround to a mates, said i'd give him a hand getting his going again, problem is the battery was deed, starter button let rip the clickeing of a starter solenoid (i think) giveing it brief charge and the starter was going again, didn't get the bike going...

I had a go at bump starting, it sounded like it wanted to go, the gentle fut futing and all, but pull the clutch in and ded...

I'm guessing the battery is not charged enough for a good enough spark? what else if thats not it could it be? theres enough petrol before you ask

My other guess was mankey petrol in the carbs, is there anything you do about it other than haveing them appart?

it'll blow the all the mankey stagnant petrol from the carbs when it turns over. no worries there. if the battery is flat, just hook it up to another bike or a car and hit start. just rememebr, that for the battery to start, it can't be attached to another battery (or you'll wait all day)

Whatever you do, do not connect another battery to your battery. Doing so is likely to make it go boom, which as it's a lead-acid battery, is not going to be pretty. If you're trying another battery, make sure the one on the bike is completely isolated, or taken out altogether


Edit: once upon a time when I was a newbie to electronics and was having a blonde day, I spent about half an hour soldering up a bunch of battery holders so I could connect all my batteries together. Dumbass me soldered them all very neatly in parallel, and put the batteries in. Luckily my tutor realised what I had done before it was too late, but some of those batteries had got very hot before he ripped them all out and binned them.

Thanks for the replys, ok the battery is now fully charged but still no going...

I can't get arround to check it at the moment but... could it be a dodgey kill switch? theres no real reason it should not splutter into life happyly, the sidestand switch should let it start in neutral so not that i'm guessing?


If i check for a spark how is it done? turning the wheel or by starter motor? do you just hold the plug against the cylinder head?

If theres no other obvious problem where would you be looking?

Check you havent got a cell down on your battery. it may be well charged but not enough guts to get the bike running.

Have you checked the plug?

I had trouble starting my CG125 yesterday so today I went and got a new plug. Fired up first go. Turns out the old plug was well oiled, wasnt producing a good enough spark to fire up. Just a suggestion, might be worth the £2.

Annoyingly i didn't think to check it, thats first thing i'll be doing when i'm there again...

Theres quite an art to diognoseing engine problems from spark pulgs, will have to look into it....

How long has it been standing? If it has been a while, drain the fuel out of the tank and fill it up with fresh petrol. Put in a new spark plug if the old one looks dodgy and hopefully away it should go.

If petrol is left standing for a while it loses it 'knock' and sometimes it can be enough so as an engine will not run on it. Its worth a try.
