Deliberately place obstacles on by-ways?

I was green laning recently, and came across a big branch across the by way, I could not see a near by tree from which it could have fallen, there just like bushes and nettles, it looked to me as if someone had gone to great deal of effort to place it there.

As I wobble along at somewhere between walking speed and a jog, it was no problem, I just moved it.

Anyone else had this?

I was reminded by a thread in general chat about rocks in the road.

Not green laning or me but my girlfriends father got taken out by wiring tied between two trees at shoulder / neck height while out riding trails on his mountain bike in a forest!

Fallen tree on the long lane track at Chilgrove was cut up by chain saw after about 2 mths of blocking the byway, but in such a way bikes and definitely Landies can't negotiate it, almost dangerous if not aware its round the corner!
Also this weekend on a lane off petworth rd at kennel corner a large circular straw bale has been placed right in the middle of the lane!
Also passed some old rupps we used before nerc bill, used to be 3m wide, so over grown now that even ramblers can't walk down them, what a waste, lost to everyone!!

I've not come across anything placed in the way yet but I have encountered the dreaded rambler!
Stubborn twats walk two a breast and refuse to move over so I can get past so I just ride as close as I can and make as much noise as I can.

I have encountered many an obstacle along my chosen route over the years,from fallen trees after the great storm of 1987 to walkers ambling along in a group of 100 or so along a byway.

But I have yet to experience anything strung across between say two trees or two uprights.This could cause serious injury or even a fatality and should be reported to the police and the local authority as soon as possible.Take photographs before and after you remove the offending material and make sure that it is followed up with the relevant authority that you report it to,otherwise some other poor sod might not be as lucky the next time.

When out 4x4'ing on a few green lanes one of our group got a puncture caused by a piece of angle iron which had been cut to a point and hammered at an angle in to the ground in a puddle.

We pulled it out and took it with us, but can't imagine what would have happpened if someone on a mountain bike or crosser had come off and hit it.

There was a lad on the KTM forum who encountered a 1 foot trench someone had dug in the middle of a popular byway He went head over heels because of it, no damage from it luckily just can't imagine it was fun pulling his bike out of it.

qb78,as we know, bikers using greenlanes have to abide by the law,bike taxed ,mot,insured,helmet worn,the fucking ramblers don't realise they are on a road and should treat it as such,walk at the side in single file,point out to them that they wouldn't walk in the middle of the M6

Yep, I have previously come across trees that could only really have got where they were with human assistance/intervention!

This tree was not across the way in the morning but was there in the afternoon on our return route.It was easy to see that it had been cut down using a bow saw.

Had many a ditch and wire across byways repeatedly on the same paths, never came off but often had slips and slides avoiding shit.

never forget the time i was using a popular byway only to find half way down a freaking huge trench was dug out, couldn't get over it ruined my day.

I've seen this a few times when I was greenlaning on Dartmoor, there were a few trails we wanted to visit but three of them had had trees felled blocking the road up to about waist height, definitely deliberately done as well as they had axe marks and drag marks where it had been placed across the road.... wish i'd taken a photo of them now. The really annoying thing was that these are byway trails that not even the ramblers bother with- most of the time huge sections of it are thick with mud and/or a couple of feet underwater... so who's to benefit from blocking it off?

Down here in Kent (Pilgrams way etc) we've had a few occasions of objects being placed in the way.

Had a HUGE tree once, and you could see the marks where it had been dragged there.

Fuckers.


I do remember coming around a corner, deep puddles, a rambler stood at the side having a go at a chap on another bike. I came around the corner on the YZF broadside (Between the other rider and the rambler), and upon corner exit, gave the clutch a quick flick, and lit up the rear wheel. Absolutely COVERED this rambler from head to toe in shitty wet mud.

Not directly related but a while back, some street across the city, some cnuts decided to tie a washing line from one side of the street to the other. They were stood watching as some guy on a dt came through. Luckily, it pulled a post out of the ground it was tied on. If not, would have thought he would lost his head because the marks on his neck were disgusting/amazing/awful. Made the front page!
